Claws of Attack

Can someone clarify if the item Claws of Attack only inflicts damage when you attacked enemy with melee weapons or for all weapons? The description for this item in the Test item Tracker says :
Claws of Attack
(+6,Dmg)(melee)
However, while I was shooting at someone with my gun while equipped with this item, it shows in the console: claws + 6 dmg.
