Valve has given us a heads up that as we finished reprogramming the WCS mod they have decided to release another game breaking update this year so we can start over. Currently the update will break all mods for the game just like the OB update.

6994

Luckily developers are already working on workarounds.

However, similar to before, there will be things that do not get updated until after the update is released and so we can expect the following things to likely break:

All custom maps
All visual effects
All custom sounds
All custom effects

The official purpose of the change is to force us to use the shitty update system that CS:GO uses so that servers will be harder to and take longer to update.

So get your meads in advance b.c I am sure when this update rolls out everyone is going to be:
6992

As for the WCS players I am sure they are going to be like:

Half Life 3 confirmed.

for 2023.

fuck's sake valve, the game came out 9 goddamn years ago, make like a beatle and LET IT BE!

but no, let's use a system that's not well adapted for the PC for a game that's solely on the PC instead of a system that was built solely for the PC.

Seems like they're continually trying to push people to CS:GO. Will it boost sales? We shall see!

They are doing it for all source games not just CS:S

The main drive appears to be so that they can create a workshop system similar to NS2 for TF2 in the future. Such technology will also allow them to do what NS2 does in the future (which is what I was worried about when NS2 came out) which is to blacklist servers that use custom maps ect and have direct control over all mods that servers can have.

6995

For example in ns2 it is impossible to have a server distribute content directly to users. Instead when I say make an update to Jack (which uses content players dl from out server) I got to submit that update to Valve first and have it accepted and then update it on the server and clients. In theory this gives everyone a mandatory really shitty CDN rather than a dedicated file serve for operations like us. What it also does is make it really hard to develop things b/c you can not test directly in the real world. For example when making changes to jack custom content I would need a second workshop mod to make those changes to so that it would not fuck up the live version. Then after testing the beta version I can then roll out the full version. However, such things clutter up the workshop between client sided mods and server sided fill (in the future workshop may address this).

Overall what I see is them simply making moves to further limit what sorts of mods and things can run in the future. If CS:GO is any indication it is clear to me that valve simply wants to eliminate private servers and mod content as much as possible so that they can sell monetized replacements.

So put simply what I see in the future is:

Valve->
6996

US->
6997

Luckily I still think we are a long way off from them destroying private servers (especially if CS:GO continues to be a flop).

However, it is important to note that they will be releasing this update for games like CS:S BEFORE TF2 so that it can break CS:S first and then they can fix any problems so that TF2 works fine. Also yes this is what they said that it would be released for all other source games before TF2 so that the TF2 servers would get a version that is fixed after the clusterfuck that happens to everyone else.

<zero's long post>

they already have workshop for TF2 though, don't they? does it differ from NS2's? i don't use the TF2 one, i prefer to mod my shit on my own (gamebananna ftw)

Lets put it another way, TF2 has hats right? Imagine for TF3 they will want the same. Valve got pissed that servers could give people hats for free (only on that server) b/c servers can give clients files. If servers can not give clients files than problem solved.

Servers cannot give clients files = death of the modding community. :(

I truly hate the direction this industry is heading. We're all going to be paying $1.50 per map pretty soon. And that's really not going to work out for me at all.

kill the modding community in a game that itself orginated...as a mod.

valve logic.

Zero can't you just take everyone's xp and steam id's and transfer them when the mod is fixed? At least then we don't have to do a crawl the third fucking time.

wait, so people are actually requesting this to happen?

i personally think those people are just BS people that are paid to write posts and stir up agitations in a perfectly working system.

By having these people create posts everywhere, people will start talking about " omgggg a workshop for css?? like skyrim? like tf2? omagerdzzz" ....
and it's actually working considering zero quoted the damn thing. At least zero knows it aint a gd thing, while other players who do not mod know that it's a BADDDDDDDD feature, and will only request it blindly because of the workshops for skyrim and so forth, because its a "cool feature' that they will probably never use.

:sigh: i kinda miss the days where modding/skinning was only for people who were slightly competent or at least only for those people who knew how to fucking google stuff.

It's like all games now days, they cater to the casuals and thus ruin gaming for the non casuals. IE WoW

In theory you then just drop in the old content and everything should work. So best case we will just have a really really long update process.

Ah now I see why they added maps to workshop in CS:GO this makes it so that the non community servers can run custom maps. Thus making other than for admins community servers worthless. Given also that many "valve" servers run SM this is clearly moving and testing toward what they can do to elimate all custom cummunity servers in the long run.

It should not take so long to fix b.c everything is in SM now and most of the effected races are coded by me.
