View Full Version : Ledgeby Unnecessary Punishment, Abuse

Admin's INGAME name: Ledgeby
Your INGAME name: NessLookAlike
Server: ZM
Map: ze_saw_final
Date & Time: 3/3/2013, ~8:30PM PST

How did he/she abuse: Ledgeby violated the following:

4. Use admin privileges sparingly and appropriately.
5. Be respectful and non offensive of our community and its members regardless of race sex, or religious beliefs.
11. Punishment should be issued in accordance with the server rules topic located in the rules forum http://www.ibisgaming.com/forums/showthread.php?t=495

(Specifically, in this case, the following ZM rule applies..)

Blocking - Players may not use the "!block" command at anytime during a ZE map. If a player uses "!block", he or she will be automatically slayed by an admin.
Not Allowed – Using a players body to deny players access to a certain area

Ledgeby slayed me for typing !block, even though !block has been disabled on the ZM server for ZE maps and does nothing when entered. Ledgeby didn't care and slayed me anyway.

Now look, I've been around here for a while and I get that this is minor and something that typically has no repercussions for the admins that do it, but it makes for a bad admin, and it should be discouraged. Admins shouldn't be allowed to get away with a series of minor stuff like this. Even small abuse is still abuse. And its indicative of a bigger problem when the admin seems arrogant and inflexible about it.

After the slay, I asked Ledgeby what the deal was, since !block is non-functional, and he insisted (as seen in the server demo attached) that I had broken a rule. I just couldn't get across to him that -- really, come on now -- no rule had been broken here. I would have copied more of the conversation, but the map was spitting out a bunch of error messages to console and I only got the following:

(TO ADMINS) NessLookAlike: Are you deaf dumb and blind or something
(TO ADMINS) NessLookAlike: It doesn't actually work
(TO ADMINS) NessLookAlike: so you just slayed me even though I did nothing
(TO ADMINS) NessLookAlike: ie. admin abuse
Ledgeby™ <ibis.a> : Go for it report me see where it gets you

Its small shit like this that bugs me, when we have admins that do stupid shit just to screw with someone's otherwise good time, and that's why I'm posting this. I have no problem with taking punishments for my actions when I do something that I know is wrong, but I hope my sentiment of "stop slaying/kicking/banning people in the server over stupid shit just to needlessly screw with their good time" picks up a bit of traction and this gets discouraged more in the future.

tl;dr Typing !block shouldn't be grounds for slaying someone because !block is now non-functional. I didn't block anyone and was slayed anyway by Ledgeby.

EDIT: The attached demo was edited to jump right before the point that I'm addressing, btw.

Uh if you did that when I was on...I would slay you too..to stop you from becoming a bad player and doing that to be a dick in the future...

Technically you did break a rule, and if its non-functional why did you type it? Either you were trying to use it, and subsequently are now trying to cover your ass, or you were just trolling the admin and server. In either case the slay was warranted and you being a dick about it doesn't help.

He was trying it because prior to the post here:http://www.ibisgaming.com/forums/showthread.php/2881-ZM-Updates-1.3.7?p=155356#post155356

It was possible and was thus patched about 8 hours ago. So prior to 8 hours ago it would have worked and anyone that had not read that thread would not have any reason to think that it did not work.

To stop me from doing what, exactly? The command is non-functional. Nothing happened. We're supposed to be punishing for breaking a rule, and nothing less. A warning would have sufficed.

Typing !block isn't against the rules. People have used !block before to get past obstacles or jump on top of props in the map. The rule is against blocking people, which I obviously didn't do, and shouldn't have been punished for.

Um, can you read?

Um, can you? Command is now non-functional. No punishment should be handed out for typing !block in chat, especially since no player blocking actually occurred, which is the thing actually being punished for.

You seem to not understand what Zero was saying, until 8 hours ago the command indeed would function, and result in you attempting to break the rules. It is not reasonable to assume that in such a short window an admin would not only be aware of this change, but that you would be aware of it as well. It still appears that you attempted to use the command, but when it did not work felt you would be exempt from punishment, which btw was very minor. Your argument is post-factual and in the context of the situation the admin did exactly what they were supposed to do, your self-righteousness is misplaced and erroneous.

The thing is is that technically he didn't use the !block command, he just typed it. If it activated then there would be an issue, but since it didn't he didn't break a rule.

That also assume the admin was aware of that and didn't merely see the command being typed, and thus rightly assumed it was activated. In the end he is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

If you watch the demo, you'll see that Ledgeby
was actively playing at the time,
was in my vicinity at the time,
must have seen that !block didn't work at the time (and understood as much based on my comment in in-game chat about it not working),
didn't receive any complaints from any players in chat or over mic that they were just blocked by me,
must have understood that !block didn't work for whatever reason by observation,

and then decided to slay me anyway.

Punishment was unnecessary. He had to have known that. And he slayed me anyway, just because, then didn't care about the facts surrounding why he slayed me in the first place, which is arrogant. Which goes back to my original point,

Your assuming an awful lot that isn't backed up by the evidence. It also paints him as out to get you which is clearly not the situation. Whatever you feel wronged you, it is clear that he didn't abuse his admin powers and was merely trying to follow the rules as written.

Just because he was playing doesn't mean he was paying attention to you, nor is it his obligation to. You tried to break the rules, you just failed due to something newly implemented. I don't think this is admin abuse because as far as the admin knew he was correct and was acting in good faith, and this change is very new. It would be similar to when !give was changed on GG, if you typed it and nothing happened the admin could still think it did ad punish you.

What would have helped is if the admin verbally confronted you first, then maybe it could have been worked out, but it's not that big of a deal as the admin wasn't just being a cunt, but rather uninformed.

The admin was trying 2 enforce the rules... and was most likely unaware that we had JUST patched that command.

You really have no one but yourself 2 blame as obviously not everyone is going 2 know it has just been patched.

I see no abuse here... just an admin trying 2 enforce the rules.

No abuse, closed.
