Okay, I haven't played an mmo in a few months and now have a craving for one. I've played wow since vanilla but its dying. Not even a challenge anymore. I also can't play eve because I enjoy my life way too much, haha. So was wondering if any of you had any suggestions? I've thought about guild wars but really know nothing about it besides the videos I've watched.
Feel free to post a good mmo and a brief description why it's better then the rest.
Thanks :)

gw2 is pretty legit, i'm starting to get back into it. it kinda sucks if you're playing it solo, though.
otherwise, dragons nest is a really good free to play one.

What's the main differences between wow and gw2? Don't send too much hate mail for asking that :x
Also what is dragons nest? My only issue with free to play is the fact that most are "pay to win" type games.

Dude,
GET GW2.
it's not pay per win, and it's not pay per play.
u buy it once, u got it forever.
it's fucking AMAZING...
u have at least 10 community members that play this including me, owns, masskid, shadow, maynard, wolfenstinger, spasm, brett, sin, rezel? and james? etc...
so we really have fun !
Also , for which server? currently me and owns and sin and maynard and rezel? and james? and (i think) brett are on Gates of Madness.
whereas the others are distributed 1 by 1 on different servers based on their real life friends and/or reddit (looking at u aco!)
so yeah, u cant go wrong with gw2, i've had it for half a year now and i barely scratched the surface... im running all 8 professions too, so u really cant get bored, u can keep swapping characters and have a favorite baby to level.
the game is pretty damn balanced too, which is saying a LOT for mmos, doesn't require a lot, and the best part is that the content doesn't loose meaning if u're higher level due to the scaling system. as opposed to WOW where it just became a money-stealing game with monthly subscriptions, unlike gw2.
i hope i catch u in game, i have characters of all levels, so im almost sure to find a suitable character and help u level specific zones.
Guardians are strong , thieves too, eles are fun but need mastery, so are mesmers etc... warriors are for those who just wanna hack and slash without actually learning to master the races properly.
edit: btw,., from personal experience, the game is more entertaining when u have people to play with... i dnt know about u but with such a strong ibis presence (i mean community members, not necessarily IBIS clanners) u almost cannot go wrong because there's AT LEAST one other member online at all times.
and we usually form parties and roam together and vent and chill

Runescape
:plzdie:
Cyber, is the combat more then button mashing? Both for PvP and PvE?
And I understand that there is no world PvP?
Are there and debuffs for "questing" in groups? Like in wow if you join a group your XP goes way down. Jw how friendly this game is to group settings.
Thanks :)

Its free, simple, rather addicting tbo, and it beta stage so best is yet to come. I've dabbled with this game since I was 14, but back then it was called Battlefield. Anyways 2d tank game with awards and tournaments. teams n such. Its LOL fun. great community. Passes the time. If you wanna learn to play like a legit player, ill show you the ropes.

Guild wars 2 fighting is not redundant, it is not stationary, and requires actual skill and strategy to master. There are no solid roles in the game like tank healer dps, everyone plays using there abilities. Remeber though, you can only slot few abilities which forces players to actually sit down and think about there builds. Combat is fast paced and never dull or the same. Because the combat is so unique and new you will never experience the same things again.

Did you ever play DC Universe online? Is it similar fighting to that?

wtf?
who the fuck told you there's no world PvP?
one of the "major draws" of the game is what's called "dub dub". It's WvWvW PvP, on a grand scale. it's one of the cornerstones of the game, and a huge selling point. I absolutely hate it, but that's mostly because i've never seen anything other than zergs of op chars running around.

Intuition and a quick google seem to call bullshit on this.
http://www.noxxic.com/gw2/getting-started/combat-roles
2nd link googled only to the wiki.
To further my point the wiki even states that while all classes can potentially fit each role, a person will still need to play that role. So basically, all classes, like in WoW, are similar to a druid or paladin in that they can potentially play the role of a tank, dps, or healer.
Now, if classes can fluidly switch between each role without needing a gear change would be a more proper question.

hardly... it's not a hard mmo by any means. you want a hard one, go play vanilla wow, finalfantasy 11 or EQ.... I don't get why people claim GW2 is so skill based... does using a dodge button really grant that much skill lol? it's a mmo with what.... 8 buttons ? All Ive seen in GW2 is a UBER casual MMORPG that damn near anyone can easily get into... I don't see any skill required for it and all this about combat never being the same or repetitive? and you never doing the same things twice? well.... I don't think you've played it much.... cause that's far from true.
and no I'm not saying it's a bad MMORPG... it's quite entertaining... and given it's a 60 dollar game with no monthly fee... I think that in it's self is awesome and it's probably one of the best 60 dollar games ever in terms of bang for your buck... shit when I'm done typing this, I'm gonna jump on and play ^^ But it's not a hard MMORPG by any means.
-Dragons nest is not an mmo for the same reason GW1 wasn't... as soon as you left town... there is no people unless you're in a party... that goes against the very purpose of a MMORPG which is having a massive constantly evolving world with people running around all over doing shit.
-Runescape is great.... if you're 10-15 years old.
-SWTOR is good for the main storyline, sucks for PVP
it's hard 2 recommend a MMORPG for you without knowing what you're looking for in one... that and the majority of MMORPG's that have come out in the last long long long long time have sucked ass and fallen flat on their face.

THIS is what I'm waiting for! I just needed a game to entertain me until that is released. I signed up for the closed beta a while ago. I think I'm just going to go with GW2 since there is such a large amount of ibis people playing it.
What server are the majority of yall on?

Elder scrolls looks ok but will reserve my judgement until i've tried it out.
Currently playing SWTOR for the stories and guild events. Really suggest you atleast try it out for the stories alone considering it's F2P and you get the all the quests for free. Restrictions isn't bad unless you want to do the endgame and leveling is pretty smooth so there is no grind, not even for raids anymore.
Really waiting for FFXIV to relaunch after playing both Alpha and Beta versions as i know i will be having much fun there :D

GW is based off strategically setting up your build for relevant situations. Yea any average player can join and play the game and find it rewarding but beyond that, skill is required. Its one of the fundamental Principles that has set GW apart from other MMOS. Having only 8 skill slots, means you need to critically think about your build and what to use. It has always been a game that reward players who were above and beyond the average player yet at the same time, making a fun and addicting game for average players.
As for the "no dedicated roles" i am implying that no class has a dedicated role. There is not a healer class or a tank class or a dps class. There are classes that can be fine tuned to meet your role needs, thus encouraging team work.

GW2 server: Gates of Madnessalso....Bwl1diq1egQYeah. Gates of Madness is where most are. Not overpopulated which is gd for pve when u dnt have huge zergs rampaging ur kills. Theres always something to do somewhere. And people here are actually friendly and helpful, and willing to shoutout for boss fights u'd been looking for. Some are not at GoM (especially if family or irl friends on other servers) but they always guest to our server free every day.

GW1 is not a MMORPG and anyone whose actually been involved with the mmorpg community over the last decade and on knows that. You can argue based on the literal wording of "MMORPG" that it is... but it's only people making a desperate plea who try and do so. What blew people off their asses when MMORPG's started was the fact you were in a on going/changing environment with hundreds/thousands of other players.... so shit was always going on... when that concept first hit, it was mind blowing... it's why the genre blew up and became what it was. If you leave town... and there are no random people questing, exploring, fighting etc... it's not a MMORPG... it's basically a RPG with multiplayer/group capabilities, nothing more.
GW2 is a great game... but it's far from any landmark in the MMORPG genre. Amazing 60 dollar game.... but does not reinvent the wheel or the genre.

WoW was crazy good back in the day. But after you do the "long" grind to the max level it takes you roughly a week worth of playing nights only to be completely geared besides Arena/End Game gear. I've done that the past 2 expansions. Paid a month, loged on, enjoyed the new questing area, hit max level, was completely geared by the end of the next weekend. Then all there is to do is level up stupid professions( to try and make a lil money) or get into arenas(only require an hour and a half to complete) or end game raid which is a FUCKING JOKE compaired to how it used to be. And even if there is someone so simple minded as to argue with that, I don't want to "have to" game until 12 to 1 in the morning or risk being booted from the guild.
Back on topic, I think GW2 will be a good fit. Something new to try out and drag my friends into. Is there anything I'll need to know just starting out?

nonono Guardian, by far the best class in the game!!!!! Versatile and great utility. Easily switch from high DPS self healing to self healing tank to ranged kiting OMFG its like sex!
Also from my experience, it is great in pvp depending on how you play. If you like killing players, maybe not your first pvp choice, if you like tanking objectives and loling at the enemy as they slash away at you... great choice then.

I made one of each profession.i agree about guardian.
Guardian was my first to 80 and its probably my strongest. And if u run dungeons people WANT you in their party due to the amount of heals/boons u diss out ... The weird part is that u'd actually ENJOY supporting them bcos that returns back to u for more self-healing and dps.
Mikey said it best, it has the best utilities in game, and u can have more than 7 different types of builds with only a few swaps. Guardian scepter+ scepter focus is leet for pve:)...same but swap the scept for sword or mace or double hammer for pvp or dugeons depending on ur build and game stage
My second favorite is thief. Strong skills and gets powerful in time.
Mesmers and elementalists are fun but VERY VERY fragile... And if u just mash buttons? u gonna die. I spent half the time trying to stand up until i learned to properly play the race. Necro was my first created race, but i didnt like it much until i rerolled it again...
And i still prefer guardian>thief>mesmer> ele>necro>warrior>ranger>engineer.... But personally warrior was boring, engineer was bad, ranger was 'meh'... Hope that helps!

Mesmers and elementalest are not fragile, they may have light armor set but a mesmer uses his illusions for confusion and dps. While an elementalist stays alive by keeping shit ton of boons on all the time and with the right set up they can tank a shit ton.
And please dont get him in the mind set that warrior is boring/engineer is bad/and ranger is 'meh'. Just because you don't like them or suck at them doesn't that he wont like them.
The other day i got roflstomped by an engineer, and i saw a ranger on my team dueling a guardian then was about to get ganked by a thief and ended up downing and killing both(ya shut up i was just watching ._.).

remember what i said:
i said :
"Mesmers and elementalists are fun but VERY VERY fragile... And if u just mash buttons? u gonna die. I spent half the time trying to stand up until i learned to properly play the race"
like i said, im not saying they are crap,on the contrary, if u MASTER THEM they are fucking badass... but u can't expect to treat them the same way you'd treat a guardian or warrior and expect to survive hits. also, u CANT deny that leveling a mesmer or ele is the easiest in the game... they're kinda fragile at first until u unlock ur high level traits.. and you know that. Especially for mesmer who's squishy until u hit lv 60...THEN they become someone u don't wanna bump into in WvW, .... but not as annoying as bumping into a thief.... (even AFTER the nerfs)
and again, when i ranked warrior and ranger, i said that :
"But personally warrior was boring, engineer was bad, ranger was '"
again, that my PERSONAL opinion on the races, as to each player their own gamestyle.
Stop being nitpicky and quoting me wrong u mafia bastard.
btw, pat, tell me what u end up deciding to play, and i'll make sure to switch to a character that would complement you well.
if u roll a necro, i can join u with my thief or ele and stack some MAD conditions that you can fest on.
If you roll an ele, just like masskid said, u'd want a lot of boons on you, and my guardian can make sure u always have 20 boons on you at all times. :)... even by standing still lol
