Well, you know my home rig that I never really play on is a Core i7 920/7950 build, my work build, that I'm on 8 hours a day, and sometimes have CSS up in the background is a bit older, but still relevant. Intel Q9650, HD3850, 8GB DDR2 :D
My wife games on a X48/Q6600 PC with a HD7850 and 4GB DDR3. Just recently added an OCZ Synapse SSD to it, to hopefully extend its life a bit longer. (still feels nice and zippy)
Now if you want to get into servers and other random computers I have... well the list is rather large.

Just built this guy back in November. I posted it in the PC tech talk thread as well, back when that big baby Ricochet was still around. :) No overclocking yet because there's no need. The total price rang in at around $900 (this is approximately a $1,300 build though, got some really, really good deals on many of the components), the machine runs like a Goddamn beastly maniac and will run every game out right now at max-max-max, 1920x1080 60+ fps.
an IPS/VA panel but I refuse to leave my 16x10. Pisses me off that 16x9 got so big. damn 1080p being more marketable...
I was just like you for years, thought 1920x1200 was superior and didn't see why anyone settled for 1920x1080. I switched to 1080p for the first time at the end of last year when there was a 27" LG on sale for $200 which I couldn't pass up and I will be 100% honest with you - there is absolutely no discernible difference when it comes to gaming, surfing the web or general productivity. This may not prove true for picture/photo/video editing, where those extra pixels might matter (I doubt it) but I promise you'll save a ton of money on a 1080p display versus 1200p and if you notice a difference, it will be barely, if at all, and likely in your mind. :)
That said, I suppose if I were going to get a 1920x1200 IPS panel because I just couldn't 'downgrade' to 1080p, this would be the one I'd snag. uhm with that noctua you usually try for Low profile ram, there is a good chance it will go over a ram slot.
If it happens you can just send the ram in and go for corsiar vengence or something.

Really stars? I did not know that. Which is the lesser sacrifice? Finding a different CPU cooler or getting weaker/smaller ram. Is that cooler even worth it?
also, i just noticed somthing, not sure if it is important or not.
My selected MoBo says: Memory Standard DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066
But my memory selected is 2400. Will they work together?
Nvm answered my own question. The MoBo will automatically configure the mem speed, if i wish to gain full power from the selected ram, ill need to find a better MoBo.
any suggestions? Price is not an issue (;
God damnit stars, you pointing that out has me changing up my entire wish list lol

your mobo can take those faster speeds, you will just have to manually set it.
You can either go for something like a swiftec h220 for cooling or keep the noctua, its a good cooler (swiftec better)

Not only that, but this MoBo has so much room for upgrade. What use can i get out of the OC key that comes with the board? Is this meant to allow me to OC my pc without loading BIO's? Its some like hand held LED thing.
jwtemp
05-13-2013, 09:27 AM
Honestly, this 'OC Key' tech was news to me, and you're correct as far as I can tell, its an attachment that allows you to set overclock numbers of your hardware without actually booting the system (avoiding possible damage from over OCing or letting you tweak things without power hitting any components).
Here's some more info: http://rog.asus.com/44802011/overclocking/rog-oc-key-looking-at-easy-and-deep-overclocking/
That said, you should not need to OC this monster for quite a long time!

who the hell OC because they need to? You do it because its fun. And to squeeze all the performance out you can. i only plan on OCing the ram for now, as there is alot of talk about how the board presets ram at 1333Mhz. What is your opinion on this build stars, as you can see i enjoy your opinion. (swapped the lunky NH-D14 with the H220)
jwtemp
05-13-2013, 09:40 AM
Uh, anyone who is practical and thinks for half a second about what OCing does to computer components? Unless you're liquid cooling, OCing your PC instantly degrades its life span. That should be apparent to anyone familiar with how PC components function. Also, why run the risk of burning something out and/or having to replace it early just so you can say you OC?
This machine is going to do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Mikey needs it to, out of the box. He'll have less than zero need to overclock. Given that he's dropping three grand on this thing, I can only in good conscience recommend he not overclock until it becomes necessary, which probably won't be for two+ years.
Side note, I don't see what's 'fun' about overclocking. E-peen? What's this 'fun' you're referring to?

The cooling on the component does not really change the lifespan a significant amount.
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?high=&m=276794&mpage=1#277197
I know im going to use my 2600k for at least 5 years. So I just stayed at 4.5ghz even though as my sig suggests I got it to 4.7 stable and could go higher with better cooling, and since I wanted it to last I did not want to go over 1.4v.
Most boards do auto set 1333mhz, but thats what XMP is for.
Mikey

you might need to do a bit of minor modding to get the h220 to work in that case but it doesnt look hard.
overkill with that PSU much? They lose there efficiency under 20% the 750W would have worked with the current build (though probably not SLI 680s with OC if thats what you were thinking) Keep in mind @ 1200W you need to plug into a 20 amp socket. 1kw PSU should be fine with a 15 amp.
Edit: whoops it isnt in my sig here....

Full modular is a must 2. gold and platinum cert are the best. Also this will be my first time using Intel and water coolers.

05-13-2013, 11:06 AM
Unless you plan on running another GTX 680 in SLI in the future, the PSU is overkill. You won't need more than a 700-750W PSU at most for your single GPU setup though, even if you added a second card, 1,000W would probably suffice. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention to the PSU or I would've said something before. :)
StarsMine
05-13-2013, 11:49 AM
plat 1.2k watt PSu is useless if you sit @ under 300W. efficiency drops like a rock under 20% load.
If you dont plan on SLI you can get away with the PSU you had in the first build, if you would like the option find a nice 1kw one. otherwise just make sure the socket you plug into is 20 amps.

Actually, I believe that was my point, since Assassin boasted about their skills despite the older hardware, and since you're so good at hack... err uh aiming. :icon_mrgreen: It was a backhanded compliment for sure.
P.S. - Kicking my ass is like playing Little League. Sure, you may have gotten a trophy, but was it actually an accomplishment? :P
I dropped the CS habit and quit gaming in general after starting college several years ago, so until last year (when a series of unfortunate events conspired to get me readdicted to CS), a desktop from 2004 was more than enough for my home needs. Last year, I decided to keep up with the times and get a laptop for school and everyday use, and I deliberately picked one without a graphics card figuring I wouldn't get distracted by new games if I couldn't run them. Well, my presence on this forum says a lot about how that went...
