so yeah.... moved into this place on the first and a fucking fire breaks out 2 doors down from me first thing in the morning... after working all night. living in a hotel atm, All I got is the clothes on my back, my PC tower and a laptop I'm borrowing from a friend for a bit... oh, and my cell phone. Will be on my cell phone only for the next.... I don't know how long, I wont even know till tomorrow if everything I own was destroyed or not. So, needless 2 say I wont be as active for a bit. Admins and regs can still reach me via steam friends, though responses might be delayed.

Holy cow man, I hope your things are all intact. Just glad you're safe - never know with a fire how things will turn out! Being displaced like that really stinks, but try to remember it could always be worse.

The fire started 2 doors down.... so if I Get lucky and the fire didn't destroy all my shit, water and smoke damage most likely did. Have a meting with the fire dept in 3 hours, will find out what's up then.

Your HDDs and anything not powered up should be good. So for example if your computer was off only your psu and motherboard should be dead.

when I ran out I grabbed my PC tower, and my external harddrive..... the xbox, 55 inch tv, external media player etc... all that is a diff story... not 2 mention all my clothes with the smoke damage.....

talked with the fire dept... basically my place is fucked and I get five minutes 2 grab a few things like clothes and shit out of there on Tuesday. The building owner is looking for a new apt for me within the complexes he owns, so that's good. Still sucks not knowing the state of all my belongings and shit though... so looks like I'm held up in the hotel room for a couple more days.

You get more time to grab more stuff later I assume? I mean all your kitchen shit should still be good silverware ect. When you think about it there is actually a lot of $$ worth of shit that people do own that will not get destroyed from smoke and water.

For your external devices a few days in rice should fix them up if they were turned off.

Hmm. I would think the complex would have an insurance policy that would cover you in this instance, given that the damage was to the entire building and 100% out of your control/not your responsibility and didn't affect just you. Definitely check into it. And yes, renter's insurance is always a must - super duper cheap (like $20/month) and the coverage is fantastic. I'm lucky in that the first apartment complex I lived in actually REQUIRED it (I wouldn't have had it otherwise) and it saved me about $15,000 after we got burglarized. That would have been an expensive life lesson indeed but thankfully I was saved by pesky rules. Hopefully you're covered by the complex.

Usually that insurance only covers the building, not the tennets stuff. That is what renters insurance is for, something I should invest in at some point.

Sorry to hear broski.....

Renters insurance is good but once something happens and you move out they drop you like flies. Thats what happened to me once my shit got stolen.

Ok... so I finally got five minutes today in my appt... it seems that the electronics and the magic the gathering cards are ok. all my cloths, my bed, couch, etc... basically anything with fabric is not doing so well. Now... here's the fun part..... when I went into my appt.... I noticed right away some things were not where they belonged.... I ran 2 my bedroom 2 check my jewelry and noticed that my pure silver chain, my great grandfathers world war 2 ring which was made of solid gold, 35 dollars in cash and a bag of mushrooms were all gone.

I was able 2 secure a new appt, so I'm living there now. I wont have internet for a week or so till it's switched over and wont be on a hell of a lot till I have.... things 2 put in my home again as I'm still not sure when they will allow me 2 actually move out when I can salvage.

It's great the electronics are still ok, but the amount of clothes I had, my limited edition Yankees Jersey, the jewelry, couches, chairs etc that I lost is really hard 2 swallow. Will take some time 2 replace all that shit. Will update when I know a bit more. Tomorrow will be getting the family lawyer out of the closet and dealing with all that fun shit as someone needs 2 answer for this. what kind of piece of shit person honestly would go and steal from people who are in my situation? It's pathetic people like that exist out there.... but enough ranting for now, will fill you guys in more tomorrow.

What you may want to look into the Fire Department's investigation of the fire. One is always done. There are several reasons for this:

1. If there was a building code violation that the landlord should have fixed that lead to the fire, you may have some luck there.
2. If the person's apartment that burnt down caused it due to being retarded, you may also have some luck.

You may not have a solid case, but for civil court you don't need it, and at this point if you get, hell, $500 out of it, that's better than nothing.
