ZM Server Dying??

I've been hearing a lot of talk lately from admins and regulars alike that the Zombie Server is going downhill fast. Anyway, I thought I would make this thread so people could post why/why not and if this is true/false and what we can do to make changes.

My Opinion:

1. Yes it is going downhill (i don't play it much though)
2. Why is it going downhill? Because a lot of changes are needing to be made and the changes aren't happening.
3. I think the max amount of players allowed in the server needs to drop. There is way too much lag because there are way too much people playing I believe. Possibly just make 2 Zombie Servers instead of 1 and limit 25 players to each.

3. should be reduced to 34/35. 2 seperate servers is un-needed. A new server should be something as in surf, deathmatch, snk. not a second zm server.

As far as I know only the very old regulars are complaining a lot about how the server is going down hill. From my experience over the last couple months there have been a consistent number of idiots who break cades, blow bridges before they should, and in general act like douches. They are dealt with easily enough, however.

As far as the server itself goes (playability, etc) I don't notice lag unless someone with overly high ping connects. The server doesn't kick them immediately, and it causes the server to lag briefly. Sometimes there is lag if the server hasn't been restarted in a while (starting around two or three hours before the normal reset time at ~6:00am EST) but other than that the server never really lags too much for me. The only real issue I have is with the change to the higher tickrate. Cades seem to fly apart much more readily than they used to, making certain spots on some maps (like roy the ship) much less viable for cading. However, I've just moved to different spots. The bad thing is when it comes to maps with fewer good spots. Good spots often get crowded. Then again, this happens to some extent on every map.

I can see that map choice is generally limited to a few maps that may be overplayed, but still are fun to play on especially considering the amount of new players. Beach Strike, Desert Fortress, and lila panic are maps that come up quite often. This is to some extent because they are well made and fun maps to cade on, but mainly because there are a lot of maps that suck in the admin map choice list. A few of my favorite maps that are relatively underplayed (at least during my peak hours of play) are places like church of mint and roy the ship. I realize it may be difficult to accomplish but we've got one map designed for us -- maybe we can request more maps from some of the more popular map makers? Fresh maps would be amazing to play on seeing as it would put the veterans and the novices on a more level field as well as spice up the player experience.

So to answer your questions:

1) No, it's not going downhill.
2) Changes won't happen instantly, I don't know many people that have the time or the motivation to put that much effort into a server constantly for very long. Also, you can't please everyone; regulars are great to have but you also have to ensure new players will continue to show up and play. You also want to ensure that new players will turn into regulars. This is generally accomplished by improving game play. In the world of games you do this by trying new things. Sometimes those changes are great and other times not so. In turn, listening to the older players is always a must. Doing everything they say, however, is not.
3) I could support a drop from the current limit of players down to 34. I don't think it would change much in terms of latency, honestly, but some maps are simply awful with 40+ players running around. I'll admit that on some maps it is really fun being one of the few left alive and being surrounded by 30-40 zombies trying to kill you. However, I almost guarantee that if there are 30-40 zombies someone threw a fail nade and broke the cade that 20 of them were in. The tick rate could be tampered with a bit more to find a happy spot. I'm generally cool with where it is now but seeing it lower again to compare would be great.

its gotten too big for its own good and none of these maps were designed around multiple Z classes and this amount of people.
the entire zmod needs to be refitted and properly rebalanced and at this rate thats never going to happen.

just lightly tweaking it and removing a few maps like your planning Zero won't do anything

obviously the current admins are not doing a very good job if the past weeks have been constant cade breaking, blowing up of bridges while humans are still on it, zteleing and mic spamming.

you guys wanted to be nice and play fair with idiots and now look at where the ZM server is. its full of little kids and idiots playing now.

also on a side not ZM is not going anywhere, its still ranked in the top 10 of all ZM servers on CS:S. just cause you don't see people in there now doesn't mean its dying. ZERO is right alot of people are busy with school right now, finals are about 3 weeks away is what I'm hearing.

instead of complaining that the ZM server is dying or what not do something about it. enforce the rules more heavily cause its been way to chill in there. strict admins are better admins than those who rather sit there and warn people.

Besides, I don't know many (if ANY) players who break the rules on purpose. Most are just trying to play the game and end up making a mistake because they don't know any better.

ZM isn't fail, and it isn't failing. Zero is improving it, apart from the lag.. Although it's slow to some of you, that isn't any reason not to be patient.

The only real problem in ZM is the idiots. I went in the other day and had my barricade broken every single round I played, and there wasn't a single thing I could do due apart from explaining what not to do and how to do things properly.. Although that is all in vain.. (New maps wouldn't be bad either, but I can't find any good ones..)

Around New Years I'll probably be getting admin again, and I'll finally be able to start helping out with the cade breakers, mic spammers, and what not again.

As for regulars moving on, people come and go, but the memories last a lifetime. New hopeful regulars are starting to appear, and soon the next prodigy if there be one in my time. Though I don't plan on going anywhere.

That being said, I speak directly from experience I've had on the server recently. Make your way to the server during the times I play. Until then, you have no way to speak for anything related to the server and no way to speak to my experiences.

How about ZM is getting boring to other people. I am engulfed with Dragon Age and minigames. If IBIS got a minigames server, it would be fun. But for me ZM got boring around October. That and too many little kids... which I detest.

I don't know what issues you guys are having on the server since i haven't played there in a long time but if you are having lag issues with the higher player base i would increase the "maxrate" to 50000 on the server end if players are currently matching it and still getting lag. Most likely most players do not have there rate setting high enough to handle players aka the default setting, i suggest putting an advert to tell people to set there rate correctly. I don't know the servers bandwidth but a good tool just to make sure the system can handle the load is http://test.realchamp.dk/bandwidth/math.php If the issue is still going on and the cpu load is not high i would contact your dedicated provider and see if they placed caps on your transfer rate.

The above suggestion will only help if you have the bandwidth and your issue is not cpu or ram related. The other option i suggest if you are still having issues with lag is instead of using windows use the linux version of srcds and recompile the linux kernal to be more efficient for srcds.

I don't enjoy the ZM server because the last 5 times or so that I've gone in there you just hear Mic Spam, He/She broke my cade, OMG WTF ZTELE, who blew up the bridge?!?!

and I hear it over and over and over again...and if I am the only admin in there or if there is just like one other, you can't really have too much fun if you do what an admin is supposed to do and fix those problems.

You gotta figure out who is doing what, hopefully lock a demo on some of it...and pay close attention to all of that shit instead of just having a good ol' time.

I'm assuming that you are either blind, or you are blatantly disregarding what I'm saying in my posts. I never said that I don't punish people for breaking the rules, nor have I ever defended people who are blatantly breaking the rules.

Most people aren't out to break the rules; they make a mistake by accident and have to be warned or taken out of the game for a short amount of time to learn what they did wrong. When I see someone that is obviously new shooting a cade, I freeze them or move them to spec to make sure they don't break the cade. I then explain to them what's up and then they don't do it again. That's 80% of the new players that play on the server that I run into. If there's a rash of people cade breaking then I start banning players. All it takes is explaining to them what's up instead of banning them. Showing players respect often causes players to return and in turn show you respect.

Also.. you shouldn't extrapolate unfounded data about players leaving the server because I don't punish beyond what the server rules state. On the same token I could say your immaturity when you played on the server caused people to leave from seeing an admin who didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. You sound as though you would be another Holy Sonic with how often you say you resorted to banning players.

We haven't been on the server at the same time while I've had admin. Until you do, you're a pretty lousy judge on how I admin.

Back on point: I'll agree that some admins are VERY new to the server. Some don't know the ins and outs of Zmod, yet and it shows. I do think that some of the admins you are referring to are at least trying and are (to some extent) getting better.

While I don't think new admins are a source of some of the servers problems, having better admins or at least a vetting process would solve a lot of woes. I don't agree with mastercheff and his idea of "ban all the new admins fuuuuuuuuuuckk", but some kind of application might be warranted. Or at least having regulars be the only players allowed to go for admin, etc.

The only issue is that Zero might take a hit to the server and incoming $$'s for a while until the quality goes back up as a result.

Ask anyone who is still playing about the days when james, hobo, res, holy SH**, anex and I were the only admins. those days were some of the best ZM has ever seen, server was full constantly, everyone was having fun, rule breakers were dealed with correctly and swiftly. none of this nice bullshit.

like I said I've stopped being an admin but yet people still want me to get it back and come deal with people in ZM since no one is doing anything about it.

I'll be buying admin again probably around new years like james.

We tried to get Zero to implicate an application system 2 years ago...and here we are. :-)

what we need is a 3, 24 person server both 44 tick with completely rebalanced zclasses that are all threating all the time, not just in certain circumstances like it is now, parachutes enabled for very few maps, and a tight map selection, THEN I would come back

Perhaps you think it was all fairy tales and rainbows because there was more than 1 admin on at the present time. Even with half of those you mentioned, there was still asshattery. So don't get it twisted and blame it on newcomers.

I mean you guys want to whine about the server is dying. Have you guys really taken a look at other ZM servers? There really isn't much to go around and brag. There is consistent traffic on the ZM server 24/7 and most of that traffic as of recent is newcomers. Don't blame new admins for the issues that is have on the server. You guys forget that Source TV is on in ZM which can discredit half of the claims people come in about "unban me" and "admin abuse" so crying wolf isn't going to get anyone anything.

Then you guys want to whine about new admins are ruining the gaming experience. There is a few who can really ruin the experience, and when it comes to that, I rather not play with them simply put. More admins = more $$$. Now granted, is ZERO really going to put an application process for admin? Isn't that getting accepted into the clan? In all honesty though, the clan is so inactive on it's servers minus ZERO and Jigsaw is currently at Boot Camp, that the remaining who are in the clan are as inactive as a dead cell phone. I understand personal reasons come into this, but perhaps then and there the application process should be taken to a new format where it's not just every year someone has to apply. I mean shit it takes awhile for the forums to even get moderated.

Being an admin should be about experience. I used to be part of a clan that was infamous in 1.3 days. *ewww* and the clan still exists, and accepts members by a simple application which then gets voted on within weeks. Not this leave an application bullshit for almost a year and still nothing. It makes people lose interest in not wanting to put an application at all.

Perhaps you think it was all fairy tales and rainbows because there was more than 1 admin on at the present time. Even with half of those you mentioned, there was still asshattery. So don't get it twisted and blame it on newcomers.

I mean you guys want to whine about the server is dying. Have you guys really taken a look at other ZM servers? There really isn't much to go around and brag. There is consistent traffic on the ZM server 24/7 and most of that traffic as of recent is newcomers. Don't blame new admins for the issues that is have on the server. You guys forget that Source TV is on in ZM which can discredit half of the claims people come in about "unban me" and "admin abuse" so crying wolf isn't going to get anyone anything.

Then you guys want to whine about new admins are ruining the gaming experience. There is a few who can really ruin the experience, and when it comes to that, I rather not play with them simply put. More admins = more $$$. Now granted, is ZERO really going to put an application process for admin? Isn't that getting accepted into the clan? In all honesty though, the clan is so inactive on it's servers minus ZERO and Jigsaw is currently at Boot Camp, that the remaining who are in the clan are as inactive as a dead cell phone. I understand personal reasons come into this, but perhaps then and there the application process should be taken to a new format where it's not just every year someone has to apply. I mean shit it takes awhile for the forums to even get moderated.

Being an admin should be about experience. I used to be part of a clan that was infamous in 1.3 days. *ewww* and the clan still exists, and accepts members by a simple application which then gets voted on within weeks. Not this leave an application bullshit for almost a year and still nothing. It makes people lose interest in not wanting to put an application at all.
