Because the first couple pages google gives you right off the bat are going to be programs ripe with viruses.

AVG is the second one on the list when you look up "free virus protection." There are even sponsored links at the top.

And I don't need to help with doing your work for you when two people already did. I am helping with you learning how to do something so you don't have to ask people on here for it when you can't take two seconds to look it up on google.

Also is your friend trans-gender or what? "His" and "her" are two different sexes if I'm not mistaken.

Has anyone else used your computer?

Get a firefox add-on called WOT (Web of Trust). Whenever you run a search on Google or elsewhere it will have a nice little green red or yellow ring on the side of the link and gives you information about certain websites and whther or not they are trustworthy. Hopefully you can avoid whatever website plagued your computer. Also be wary of Facebook and Myspace apps, even if they are "approved" and try not to click on links even if it's "omg look at this cool pic I found!".

Edit: Re-format your computer and get that free anti-virus. Load up important files on a flashdrive or cd's. You may want to partition your hard drive as well.

Nope, actually partitioning the hard drive itself. That way when you run BIOS you can choose which hard drive needs the clean-up and you can keep all of your important files on the partitioned part.

It would still be a good idea for her to grab an external hard drive :). Meh.

Alright, hopefully I explain this right.

Restart your computer.

During the load up your going to want to load windows in safe mode.

You can do this a couple of ways but the way that I do it, which is not the best way, is to wait until the windows icon pops up and the loading bar is loading windows. Power down. Hold the power button until the computer turns off.

Power on.

You should get a message that states that windows was improperly shutdown and la la la la. You should have the option to 'Run Windows in Safe Mode". If it gives you that option with networking enabled select that one.

If your in safe mode and you can't access the internet then you need to turn on your networking device. I can't remember how to do that just right now, but you do need to get into your Device Manager.

Once in Safe Mode, (Safe Mode is basic windows. Poor graphics and no programs will load with out you specifically telling it too, so the virus should not start up.) Go to your anti-virus site and download the program. I suggest Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx). It actually score very high according to Maximum PC.

After downloading, install, run. Do a full scan and it should ping the virus.

In safe mode, when you restart you will restart windows in normal mode.

did you try my method or another?

another is to spam the F8 key or F9-12.

The virus would not be active until windows is loaded up so it's not affecting your ability to enter safemode.

Also, as far as I know, I haven't heard of a virus that was able to change your bios settings from windows.

Reformating isn't always necesary...

Also try Avast, free and pretty decent AV.

Certain malware/spyware trojans are highly "advanced" and can not be removed by AV alone. Some things actually require registry editing ect to be done.If you don't know exactly what you are doing you will screw things up very badly.

If you can back up and reformat and you are most comfortable with doing that then that is what I suggest you do. That doesn't go to say that you may accidenly drag the trojan to back up and wind up with the same problem your currently in. Id check and clean the files if necassary in a VM before you put them back on the PC.

If you can't get into safe mode, you're pretty much boned. The only chance you had was getting into safe mode and running antivirus/antispyware without having the full gambit of services running.

Do like Zero said -- simply backup, format, reinstall.

Definitely get yourself at the very least some free antivirus, though. (As previously suggested, AVG is free and works reasonably well.) Install SpyDoctor as well when you're done. That'll help with some of the stuff that slips through AVG's fingers. Good luck!

There is no way that your computer can restart but not get into safe mode. No fucking way.

You can log onto the forums, play games, and surf the net, but you can't use any anti-virus software or do anything listed to FIX the problem? And you are coming here instead of somewhere where people can actually help your plight much better?

Agreed, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. If good ol' F8 on startup and "Safe Mode with Networking" doesn't get you where you need to go, but you can login to your desktop normally and use the internet and play CS, you've got some fancy new HIV I've never bore witness to, and I own my own IT Consulting company lol.

Sigh...

First (if you haven't yet)...run DISC CLEANUP, and do a defrag.

Second, go to www.ccleaner.com download the newest version of that program and run all of the cleaners on it. The cleanup, the registry fixes, everything. MAKE SURE TO DO ALL CLEANERS! Registry is very important here.

Once you have completed that...

Go here: http://www.eset.com/

and download the free trial of NOD32. It picks up viruses on our PC's at work that Norton, McAffee nor AVG pick up, and is the only anti-virus that has finally worked on our computers at work.

Anyway...I've had the same problem at work before I got all the comps NOD32. Tried to run Anti-virus...it wouldn't load or anything, and I just had to clean it up, download C-CLEANER, run all the stuff...fix/delete the registry and then it finally let me run an antivirus and get rid of the weird viruses on the computer.

Do all this and LMK how it works.

There are plenty of "geeks" on forums specifically for these problems that won't charge you. Hell Dell provides free online customer support with their computers (inb4 FOOK DELL IT SUCKS)

It is hard to understand when you are providing very little for people to help you with. What happens when you restart? Does it give you a chance to go to safe mode? Do you even know how on this computer? What is the procedure when you normally enter safe mode and what does it tell you when you try to do that?

If you want people to understand your "problem" then you need to provide more details. Like, way more than what you have provided. And I am telling you people who do this daily would be a better idea and you don't have to pay for it. I doubt you even looked.

Here is the first link I got from Google: http://www.techsupportforum.com/

Those pesky Advanced trojans are sometimes a PITA to clean up.

I've been running Comodo, Avast or Nod32 on and off, along with SpyBot and CCleaner for years now and have not had one single virus / adware besides VM testing. Firefox, Add Block +, 64 bit OS's, along with some knowlege and no stupidity of clicking on random things that arent contained in a VM have kept things nice and clean for me.

honestly, this one was only a problem because it blocked actions it took as threats. any malware detector would pick it up and wipe it, but it came w/ a trojan that blocked any antivirus website or program from functioning. that tdsskiller toolk though, shit. doubleclick, restart and boom! first thing she saw when her comp came back to desktop was spybot bitching about avg being allowed to exist (love the fights between antivirus progs. lol)

coincidentally, i used teamviewer's fps mode to transfer the setup .exe and the .zip folders she needed over, since she couldn't get to the sites to download them.

Wow...the first and only thing I told you to do to your computer was to Scan/Fix/Delete the registry. Ccleaner isn't an anti-virus program and scrambles it's location constantly and cannot be blocked by spyware/viruses. HENCE WHY I TOLD YOU TO USE IT.

What do I know though...I'm just a geek in your words.

I don't know how to scan/delete/ fix anything with the registry!

I'm sorry!

And I couldn't download the Ccleaner for some reason...
