So hopefully I will be able to join my IBIS brothers and sisters once again.

I'm buying a computer from a local company that I can call and have customized. I'm doing so because if anything ever happened I can take it right to them, plus they have good prices.

So here it is.

Quad Core Duo

2 Gigs of RAM

250 Gig HD

Siig PCI soundboard

GeForce 9800GTX

Windows Vista

Acer 19"

With an Anti Virus program.

All of this can be upgraded I just need to call them, I'm thinking more ram and bigger HD but everything else is fine with me. What do you guys think ?

Oh and this is all 1,400$ (Price still does not really matter and my mom is the one who brought this up so its gunna happen and it aint my money lol.)

In my opinion you can put together a much better system for 1400 if you were to build it yourself. I had some extra time on my hands tonight so I did a little bit of research on Newegg.com and I put together a pretty sweet system for you for about 1400.00 bucks. It looks like this:

Case: Any Full size ATX case (I would go with Antec): 150.00
MB: Asus m4a79t deluxe: 180.00
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 (quad core): 180.00
VGA (Graphics Card): XFX Radeon HD 5770: 190.00
Memory: Corsair 2x2: 115.00
HD: 2 Western Digital 500 GB: 120.00
PSU (power supply): Antec 700w: 90.00
DVD optical drive: Lite on: 30.00
Monitor: Acer 19": 120.00
OS: Windows 7 64 bit: 140.00

I am pretty sure this adds up to about 1315.00 so you would have some money left over for your sound card and Wireless card too. So I suppose what I am saying is that you can definitely get a better graphics card, more memory, more HD space, in my opinion a better OS and probably a cooler case for less money!!! Not sure if this helps or not, but I just thought I would let you know what is out there!!!

Whoa man thanks. The only problem is that my mother (whom pretty much controls every bit of cash in the family) has her mind set on this company. I could easily call them up and tell them I want better shit. I just wanted to know if that was a good/decent setup as is. I wanted a better HD and more RAM and thats about it. Remember.. Money really is not an issue here.

I think you got a pretty good setup going there....you are right though, I would definitely suggest more ram, at least 4 gigs, and I would opt for two HDs, 500 gig each. Also, that graphics card is good, but I think you might want to do a little bit better there as well, but for the most part you have a good system!!! I prefer windows 7 over Vista, but that is just me......Goodluck man, you are going to be doing some serious gaming with this new system!!!

lol buy the parts and put it together yourself. or just buy the parts and pay for someone 2 put it together for you. 1400 for that is a HORRIBLE DEAL

I paid 700 bucks for my PC and it's better then the 1 you posted... and the reason for that is cause I didn't buy it from a big company.

buy the parts, don't buy a pre-made rig from some big wig company.

lol.

She knows we need a new one so price really isn't an issue. This company is close to me and I can call them up and customize it any way I wont. Seriously I don't give a shit about money and I don't really need to be running anything to complicated, one game and maybe a Internet Browser is all I would have going so I don't need the greatest system ever. If it ever like blows up and melts on me I can walk it in for a complete refund and a new computer. So all in all I would say its a pretty good deal.

Did I say price doesn't mater ? BECAUSE IT DOESN'T.

what I posted is absolute overkill for gaming and for making videos. the two hardest things a computer can do for normal users.

Realistically you might want an i5 or a lower end i7 with a 5870 and 6gigs of ddr3 in triple channel
A mid sized tower and a an 800 watt PSU to give you space to upgrade to crossfire 5870

Or if your budget is even smaller go with a phenom II.

ZERO
03-01-2010, 06:17 PM
that was the best you could do for no budget? Just 3 parts of my computer = the entire amount you just spent...

Also how was that overkill?

If you want overkill and a no budget limit just build my computer with the parts that have been invented since then.

Also if you just want a prebuilt with no budget why not just buy an Alienware!? I mean when you throw cost out you can do anything. There is a ton of stuff that was cut from my computers budget to make cost and I would highly suggest that if you want a great computer at unlimited cost to simply build the SBII revision 2. (I am using revision 9) Estimated cost is >=$10,000 and will give you basically the most powerful desktop computer on earth. You will also need to spend a few hundred on electrical upgrades to your room/house and possibly some more money for upgraded air conditioning as my version already maxes out a regular ac in the summer.

Also 1TB is not enough space if you need a lot of video storage. I have 3.5TB for my entire system and I expect it to last 1-2 years before 2TB more is needed.

Hey bro I bet there are some Ibis members that are local to you that would be more than happy to help you put a rig together. Try to explain to your mom that getting that machine from the company you were talking about it a complete rip off. Have her read this thread if she doesn't believe you. I realize you said that money isn't an issue, but for that amount of money you can get a beast of a system instead of the mediocre one you are thinking about getting! I think asking around and seeing if anyone is near you to help with a build would be my best suggestion. I would be more than happy to help you build this rig but I doubt you are in the Ohio area!! Goodluck and hopefully everyone's suggestions on here will help.....

Yes well your not normal.
and hell, even though I said no limit, I limited my self as to not put in that 1 grand extreme quad core i7 (makes me wonder what the hell the hexacore will cost).
I also didn't put in any overclocking equipment. That tower supports a shit load of fans and you could probably put a massive cooler on the processor and shit.
I could have put 4 1tb harddrives and tell him to RAID 5 it (or does that take 5 idk).

Yea for no budget get:
$400 ASUS P6T7 WS Supercomputer
$1689 Xeon W5590 Nehalem-EP 3.33GHz
$4000 OCZSSDPCIE-ZDM84512G (512GB 780mb/s+ read/write) 2x
$2000 BFGEGTX2951792BE x4
$600 KHX2000C8D3T1K3/6GX x2
$549 PPCT1200ESA

So that is $9238 but you will need another 2-3k for cooling and cases.

Now this is unlimited budgeting!

Cooling needs (estimated price)
$90 Latest EK supreme version
$300 30-50ft of 1/2 ID tubing laboratory grade
$250 34+ 1/2ID bitspower compression fittings
$700 3-4 4x 120mm fan radiators
$400 3-4 335 pumps
$100 3-4 335 upgraded pump tops
$600 4 295 full blocks
$200 1 p6t7ws fullblock cover
$100 3-4 tanks
$100 possibly quick disconnects fittings
$20 possibly female female couplers
$400 30+ 120mm fans
$60 24 carrot diamond thermal paste
$200 6 fan controllers/temp readers
$130 6-8 bitspower temp probes
About $3650 needed for cooling without coolant, regardless of coolant even if water is used you will need at least $100-$300 more.

So as you see considering the budget for the SBII revision 2 was $15,000 this configuration is fairly close.

hell I was right, the graphs also show that the Phenom II is more powerfull then the i3 :P

Considering the Mobos for that cost 100$ and the CPU costs 100$ also, I think that the power you save is rather insignificant
It uses the same amount of power on idle, just uses more on full load. who puts a quad core on full load? I hardly do that with my Pentium unless im converting a video, even then the speed of such a processor means it takes less time to do it

hmm didnt put the Mobos into my logic above.

Actually a supercomputer was built with the parts listed above except they used 7 gpus instead of 4 since they were not using sli. there's actually cost less money but was less powerful in many aspects as it was built for processing 3d xrays. This systems power and processing capability once configured is unmatched even by low level supercomputers. Also if you were using a node system which is how the ps3 thing works you can just 2x or 4x ect the above config and put it in a node config and then you would have a real computer computer. In fact if you did not care about gaming and only computation as your suggesting in your post a simply motherboard switch for one with 2cpu slots and 2x the ram slots will be better than any config your suggestions can match. This is logically short of using intiam parts or other equipment that is highly specialized. At this point though you will need a custom linux version to make it work and even custom fraimware/bos. My suggested config is the best all category system for sub $15,000.

Have you ordered anything yet b/c I can price out a system at any price point with the best parts. I have made 3 computers with the i7 systems so I am very familiar with the current gen technology. I actually priced out a cool sub $1,500 water cooled computer a while back too. For under $2,000 you can actually do a lot and not only with parts but with looks too!

He said his mom is set on this company....so I think all of our suggestions of rigs for him to buy off of newegg isn't doing anything. He has only one choice apparently and this is to buy his complete system from this company right down the street or whatever. All we can do is suggest that he tell this company to build him a bigger computer with better stuff and he is just going to have to get freaking raped on the price. We all have the luxury of putting our builds together and buying from where we want, but if his mom is strict on buying it from this certain place, then oh well she is going to get raped on the price.....

GOOD memory is still pretty expensive. I have seen some of these lesser companies putting out some pretty crappy memory at a cheap price, but obviously you are getting what you pay for!! As for HDs I haven't seen any increase in price on those....I am seeing western digital and seagate 500 gig for around 55 dollars and most TB HDs are going for around 90 bucks, I just looked and saw a 2 TB for 180. These prices don't seem outrageous to me.

Well memory is at a cross road right now, ddr2 is getting phased out so its getting more expensive, ddr3 is getting cheaper but not as cheep as ddr2 once was.

I hadnt noticed Hard drives getting more expensive though.

I remember when ram was $500+ to get the best and that was 512MB so stop crying. Yes price is up but back in the day it was one of the most expensive parts of the computer and now it is a much smaller part of the budget. While prices are up it is due to actual economic reasons unlike the 100% increase in SDD pricing that is only due to increased licensing fees. This increase occurred in September if I recall however regular HDDs did not really increase in cost. I just got a 2TB 7800rpm for $135 and I can assure you it was more expensive 6 months ago and much much more 12 months ago. Also I remember when it cost me $300+ for 75GB when it was the largest.

Also is she really set on some no name company!? I think the real issue is she is just set on him not making it himself, in which case he should be able to buy from anywhere that builds computers. Once again assuming he really does not have a budget the best options are to look at alienware or falcon NW.

actually, i can't stand 7...at all. it blows. horribly. vista''s incredible. i've had no problems with it at all except for the windows update thing and i don't blame vista for that one. it's seriously the best os i've ever used. going from xp to vista wasn't as big a jump as 98 to xp (don't count ME...ever) but it's still better.

250 trb hdd? You mean 250gb but why have that and a 1tb drive or is that off too. A 2tb drive is < $ 250gb + 1tb.

It looks like it should be faster than my tv computer for >2x as much money and that is only b/c my tv computer does not have a great gpu (9600) b/c it is not for gaming.

But my tv computer does have a better:
cpu
PSU
ram
and the rest is not worth that much.

I think maybe we are bised b/c we do not know how much that lcd was. It could have been really $$ and that is why it seems so overpriced. How much was that lcd anyways.

Also remember this is a store bought system and those are overpriced to start with and with that in mind this is probably not too bad.

I'm pretty sure if the average kid whose getting a PC bought for them sat down with there parents and said "hey! lets do this, we can get a better computer, and literally save you hundreds of dollars!" they would more then likely be down. ive never met a parent that wouldn't be interested in saving hundreds of dollars... raising kids is exspensive enough as it is.

03-16-2010, 11:49 AM
I do not know b/c even my parents have been weary b/c it starts to sound like a gov spending program when you do high level savings. In that I was building 3 computers all for the price of one good one they just refused to believe it. Logically 2 of the computers were built from the parts of one being upgraded but they just concluded it was some sort of trick.

The problem is that as soon as what your doing is too complicated for the buyer to understand they just stop listening even if it can save them money. This is seen more when I was trying to lobby for a program that would have allowed funding for upgrades to my computers in exchange for my sister getting the old parts as it would have been way faster than anything they could buy her. In fact I was not even allowed to have any say in what sort of laptop she gets because they were convinced it was some sort of trick so that she would get fucked and I would end up worth something really awesome. Finally after years of buying 2 $500+ laptops every year they finally agreed to just buy her a gaming laptop. This though is more of the case where your trying to say $2000<$500 in the long run.

maynard
03-16-2010, 11:52 AM
ya I guess I see what you're saying. a lot of ppl also feel like the more they spend the better they're getting.... sadly with PC's that's not the case... but yeah... I guess it's easier for someone who doesn't have much PC knowledge 2 trust a main company like dell as opposed 2 some guy who just sells parts.
