If it's unreadable then you're pretty much screwed, but you could try some freeware file recovery programs just in case.
there really isn't any utilities online for extracting data off a USB drive and if your PC can't read the USB drive itself you're going to have to take it apart and see if the chipset isn't damaged where it can still be extracted from...buttt....that's gonna cost you some money if you can find someone to do that for you in the first place. If the data is irreplaceable then it'd make sense to do it, if not, it's not worth the time effort or the money.

yea, i figured it wouldn't be worth it seeing how there were people charging outrageous amounts for data recovery ($99 was lowest i think i saw?) sigh, time to trash it.

dunno, friend handed me it and was like "its broken and I don't know what to do with it" so yea, even I don't know whats on it...lol
could use it for target practice

Not sure, but I'd think w/e the default format would be for when you first get a flashdrive.
default format is usually FAT
