View Full Version : wtf microsoft?

so, at work i'm overhauling one of PHA's (philadelphia housing authority) computer labs, bringing the computers from almost crap up to fairly nice ones...and i've been working with windows 7 fairly extensively...

one question:
why does 7 suck so much ass? i'm honestly thinking about passing on the 20$ deal i can get through school, and buying a copy of vista for my new computer. yes, 7 sucks that much. microsoft has dumbed vista down to the point that a kindergardener with aspergers syndrome could probably get it running no problem. but for me, it's just an annoying, impossible to use piece of worthless shit.

the ui is ugly, and the various changes they made make the slightest tasks i could accomplish easily in vista into annoying searches through dumbass catagories in controlpanel looking for the right goddamn link. also, the fact that your start menu is stuck with the shitty layout that is the default pisses me off too. honestly, if it wasn't going to be 20$, i would say fuck it.

pros:
-fast boot time (yes, i must admit. 7 boots barely slower than Ubuntu 9.10)

cons:
-dumbed down
-ugly
-uncustomizable ui
-everything that was good in vista has been fucked over

long story short, if vista would be cheap i'd use it. if ubuntu (11.04 running gnome 3.0, because unity looks even worse than 7) would actually be viable, i'd use that.

fuck windows 7

Uhh... the UI is almost an exact copy from Vista. The OS itself is for that matter (minus some core parts).

In cp change the view to small icons to get a more classic feel.

The start menu (links and pins [pop outs/non pop outs]) and "taskbar" are customizable and skinable as with the entire UI.

The memory utilization is ramped up, apps start and stop faster than Vista ever made them, and the software sound overlay (which I hate) is actually improved a good deal. I have found that 7 is a vast improvement over Vista and its menu layout. I honestly remember going through even more menus in Vista when testing it.

Also you can just make it look like xp right after install without even using any special programs. Just adjust the settings and there you go :wtg:

"more classic" != classic. it looks like shit. i want the fucking quick-launch things next to the start button, but they shouldn't act as the fucking window. just icons that open windows.

lol? you can't customize shit for the start menu. just what does and doesn't show. i don't care abloout that. i want to change how it's layed out

no shit. that's what i'm talking about. they dumbed everything down to the point that it's simply tretarded.

I never had or will use the quick launch shit it was a waste of space in all versions of windows. The only thing the start bar should have is the dam start button, the programs that are open, a clock and the little icons for shit like your av and updates. If you want quick access to a program make an icon on the desktop or pin it to the top of the start menu.

Then re-enable the quick launch that was in XP and Vista. I find the pins to start menu and taskbar next to start menu way more efficient. One click to Firefox and Thunderbird is win.

You CAN change how the start menu is laid out with "advanced" editing.

IDK about you, but I'd rather go through less bs menus to get to what I want to do.

Really? Windows 7 is the most customizable windows I have ever seen. I dont understand how windows 7 is dumbed down, It is very user friendly (there Is NOTHING wrong with being user friendly), and if you so choose to allows you to get down to the nitty and gritty choices that only advanced users even want to access.

Wtf was so good in Vista that we dont have in 7?

I am running Arch linux, in my point i also installed xorg, hal, and gnome. I turned the theme into a mature and very eye candy matrix theme. Not only that but arch is faster than 7. You add the desktop environment and its function. It is easy with video tutorials and arch wiki. I'd recommend taking a look at it. Also the best part is that it is a pretty small operating system and its growing really fast, even though its just a command line at the start which would be the terminal. But with arch you customize it any way.
I use it for the sole purpose on testing linux applications for my projects.

no, i'm mad because the pc i'm building is basically my lovechild, and it'll be born into this world polluted with the single worst os i've seen since windows ME (not including mac os's)

my laptop (what i have now) is not a piece of crap thank you very much. it kicks ass. however, it is slowly beginning to show its age.

i have ubuntu 9.10 (atm) installed on my external HDD as a back-up/hobby thing. if i went linux, it would be either ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04 9w/out the shitty unity interface or gnomeShell. i'd install GNOME 3.0 instead)

When i first built my computer I put in Vista just so i can use the 64 bit OS with my 12 GB RAM. It didn't crash on me ever. Though it was heavy, I checked process and there was a SHIT ton of wasted memory being used by god knows what. Win 7 is much lighter and faster. Games and programs open up easier and run smoother. Its customizable and user friendly. XP > Vista, Win 7 > XP/Vista.

It actually does look quite nice, and please no bitching about the lack of desktop, it is there, they show it. Dont just look at the first minute and then close it like so many else of the people on the internet. They are just showing what you can do with what they have built so far

Xp Pro > Win 7 > Vista Ultimate 64bit > 98 (just my personal preference)

Not to start a flame war, but most people that I have run into who were huge fans of Win XP Pro (don't know if the other editions made much of a difference because I went from Win98 to Xp Pro) didn't really like Vista, but like Win7. Then other people who I have talked to, who like Vista, hate XP and Win7. One thing everybody had in common was that they all hated Windows ME. lol

Sorry if this post seems really scattered, I have been up since 2am working.

no problem.

the thing i have a problem with is that so many people hate vista with such a passion. it's a wonderful os. a bit heavy, ad had its early quirk, but i honestly have been 100% satisfied with it from day one of using it.

It does indeed look nice, but in my opinion what they did there. Is get windows phone 7 integrated on an actual pc OS. in my opinion for the average windows user, windows 8 in that video, is going to suck big time. Sure, it looks pretty neat, and i like that. but goddamn I couldn't find shit if my life depended on it.
