View Full Version : Access and use Steam Chat (and other IM services) from almost anywhere!

I created a bunch of community groups here on IBIS earlier including one for BlackBerry smartphone users. After I finished with them I remembered about a site/app I use to regularly access and use Steam chat from almost anywhere including PC, web, BlackBerry, Android, Nokia and iCraps...I mean iPhone/iPad. Yes, I'm biased. Anyway, the site/app is IMO. It's free and allows you to access and use a bunch of IM/social networks AIM, Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Hyves, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, MySpace, Skype, Steam Chat, VKontakte and Yahoo. I already spoke to them and requested they add raptr and xfire chat. Other features:
Multiple Protocols
All Your Friends Together
Chat Groups
Voice IMs
Chat History
Location Sharing
Chats Tab
Multimedia Attachments
Linked Accounts
Concurrent Sessions
It's a must have for me and I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good chat app on multiple platforms. Check it out at imo.im (http://imo.im) and let me know what you think. :smirk:

I was thorough and informative about something I thought IBIS site members would find useful, so I suggested it. Is that why? Does that even make sense? Nope.

Completely irrelevant to me making a useful contribution. It's not too good to be true, I use the app and site every single day and recommend it to everyone especially since it's free.
As for me being...me, I've already gone through that whole thing in my clan app (http://www.ibisgaming.com/forums/showthread.php/7360-iRockedUrFace-s-App) so I won't bother going into too much detail, but I'm known by enough for it to be "legit" in the sense it's being used here, because it's obviously legit. You, acolyte and everyone else on this forum didn't start off with 1000+ forum posts and other upped stats so how about you guys chill with the "new guy" thing.
I participate when there's something I find interesting and this is me participating AND trying to generate interest for others to participate.

...i don't quite understand why you're getting all pissy.
it's simple.
you come out of nowhere, going on and on about this site, that sounds FAR too good to be true. especially since in the past, we have actually discussed things like this and it was found hat you couldn't have steamChat w/out being logged into steam. thus, outside chat apps weren't possible. it's a security thing i guess.
also, when you go to the site itself, you get a bunch of fields to enter login info. for everything. aim, skype, msn, gmail, steam...it seems like one huge fishing scam. nothing about it seems the least bit safe.

I never said I didn't understand, don't blame others for your assumptions. All you had to do was a simple Google search or just ask for details on my experience with it but no, you figured you'd just point out the obvious about the site's landing page instead of clicking around a bit. I expect more from a Drexel dude but hey, everyone's different I guess.

It's incredible how quickly you have dissolved any form of respect (which was slim to none as it was) that people had for you prior to that post. You honestly create a clan app, blowing up your own ego, and then go and be a dick towards well-respected members of this community?
Let up on the ego brah, because honestly nobody here is going to give 2-shits about a no-name like you unless you start respecting people.
It's odd though, you write INCREDIBLY similar to slipstream.

An opinion that was presented in a wrong, ill-mannered way. I'm not being nice to those who aren't nice from the beginning and acolyte has been on me since I joined without reason. I presented my material in full in the hopes that it would be liked and used by others. Instead the troll comes around and jumps on it without googling it ONCE. Regular, admin, owner or not, respected or not, you don't do that to someone who is offering something useful in the way that I did and I have absolutely no problem defending myself against people like acolyte.
If he can't handle my retort then he shouldn't instigate. Simple. Sarcasm != discussion.
--
Your Facebook comment...now THAT is a valid opinion I can work with (which has actually been proven) and I completely agree. If he were to say something like that or ask, I'd say imo.im has its own encryption so there's a good amount of security but again, I'm sure it's not impenetrable. If Fb or PSN can get hacked then yeah, I'm sure imo.im can but that's a risk the user has to weigh out like with anything else.
When would valve have allowed this? I have not seen an official topic about this only requests for exactly this which have gone unanswered by valve for years.

If validly defending myself and content causes me to lose respect with some then there's a problem with their definition of respect. You give respect to get respect and if not, you don't initially disrespect someone because you don't know them. You haven't technically disrespected me so I don't disrespect you. Same goes for scribble and anyone other than acolyte. Acolyte on the other hand likes to non-constructively criticize and make it obvious that he's being sarcastic, which is already obvious. If he had a concern he could have just asked because I'm more than willing to explain as much as I can.
And the clan app thing was me having fun. It was misinterpreted, I get that. That was my fault since no one personally knows me or my personality so I can see that it would sound like I'm "blowing up my ego". Being a well-respected member of a community doesn't make it ok to be a dick to others, especially new people who they don't know well enough and who are willing and trying to be participants of that community.
I'll respect people that haven't given me a reason to do otherwise.

They haven't directly mentioned imo.im but that's normal for a non-official service that offers an integrated experience like IMO does. For example, RIM doesn't mention every BlackBerry app that gets put on their App World store same as Android doesn't mention the apps that offer a similar experience with access to Steam content.
I guess it's up to you whether you'd be willing to entrust your accounts with IMO's encryption. There's always going to be a risk as scribble pointed out with Facebook and I pointed out with the PSN getting hacked. I guess it comes down to the pros/cons of using such a service but I love it.
Since I've contacted IMO as press I can ask how they tap into Steam's network if you'd like...?

I'll definitely ask them.
That's odd about the Android version not showing it. Are you sure you have the latest version?
The only use I would have for this particular chat service is if it lets me get steam chat on my android phone, which this program does not allow me to do.
Despite your claim to the contrary, this does not allow steam chat to be used on android-powered mobile devices.
I tried it. Didn't work.
and as Zero said, this is an issue that Valve has been inquired of, and remains silent.
nothing personal, it just doesn't work as you said it does (with regards to steam chat, specifically on android).

Well I've only used the BlackBerry version which does have Steam. Since the other platforms seemingly get more attention, I figured they had it before the BlackBerry version did. I'm surprised. I'll find out why this is.
I've also already sent an email about how they tap into the networks. I know they have their own encryption services.
---------- Post added at 01:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:31 PM ----------
I just checked the features for each device and the BlackBerry version is the only one to offer Steam chat. The only reason I can think of for this is that BlackBerry devices have their own encryption which offers a double layer of security when coupled with IMO's encryption. Of course, this doesn't help the versions for the other platforms since Android and iPhone are weak with their level of security, but the single layer of security should be enough.
I'll wait for their reply about the Steam chat integration and then ask about Steam chat for the other platforms, and when/if it will be made available.
As a BlackBerry blogger and fan, though... :w00t:

If you're using it through a web browser you'll always have access to Steam chat if not through a dedicated mobile app.
