View Full Version : Desk Collapse
SO after about 10 years of service my nice wood desk finally collapsed. Luckily nothing was on it at the time but basically the support beam ripped out of the left side which had become weak from moving it back home.
Anyone got any suggestions as to where to look for a new desk. I need something in wood that has a wide keyboard tray. It also needs to be over 62" long and as deep as possible.

Fuck that. IKEA is garbage. If you ever have to move a desk more than 3 inches you might as well just take a hammer to the thing

After the furniture industry moved from NC to China it is all crap. I would look on Searchtempest and look for someone who happens to be getting rid of one. Buying a new one that fits those specs is going to be $$$$.

Build your own nice sturdy big desk for ~200$ or be prepared to shell out over 700$ for one that you describe. I assume you mean a SOLID wood canopy type desk. One with a huge monitor space for your CRT, and a few side cupboards. I have searched well for a medium sized desk of about 48 inches, found none under 500 made of solid wood. I actually bought mine from a relative for 100$ wanting to remove it and save space as they only use a laptop now.

What I might do is try to get someone to rebuild the desk and while they are at it put in a full width keyboard tray. For one it could be a lot more sturdy if the try was attacked to the actual sides of the desk instead of the bottom on the top board. In addition having a 62" keyboard tray is great especially if you got a wide keyboard like I do. Normally I only have 10" of space for my mouse to move left and right which is why I have always played with such high sensitivity. The real key would be having a new tray built that is that size as it needs to be strong enough to resit about 1000N of impact force.

Easy solution ^.
Cut out the old wood and rebrace the desk. Add a cross support for the back.
2 side rails, 2 under rails with underlying braces, done.
Alternatively I have located a replacement desk. This is one of those last desk you will ever buy solutions:

Unfortunately at $2000 for the 72" version and shipping I think I would need to start a donation drive to afford it :banghead:
The buy zero a kick ass desk fund, anyone? Hey in theory with a really nice desk (and perhaps if I ever got a new chair) I could sit at the computer longer and finish more wcs races... :lmao:
