Last time I had this issue I saw the cluster fuck was not going away and immediately rented a car and drove back. If that is still an option it may be your fastest solution. Also I know that rail is a joke in the US but in the North East there may be a train that can get you to where you need to go or possibly far enough to then rent a car to make it the rest of the way.

Upstate NY to Cali isn't the best for rail or car travel, I could have rented a car and driven back by now, but it would cost quite a bit, rail as well.
