Thread: Who is your service provider, and what Internet speeds to you get?

  1. #1

Default Who is your service provider, and what Internet speeds to you get?

I'm going to be moving recently and finding the right ISP is what i'm after. I'm in the contiguous United States, more specifically Indiana.

I'd just like to know what kind of speeds/service I can expect from Verizon, Comcast, AT&T, etc... Right from the mouths of the customers, rather than the assholes of the providers.

So if you will, where are you, what is your provider, how fast are your speeds, (if you're comfortable will telling everyone) how much are they charging you for that, and how happy are you with their Internet/customer service.

I have mediacom and it's garbage. it's slightly less garbage than the other provider in my area but it's still garbage. downside to not living in a big city

    Oceanic Time Warner

Your top end scale is too low. Around here packages are 10, 25, 30, 50 and >=75 except for dsl where they are all <30

Mediacom I pay for 50 down, but newsgroup service tops it out at 100 - 110 down on average. West of Chicago, East of the Rockies.

Up never gets past 10-15 megs but no complaints.

Hate mediacom and dealing with them, but I pay month to month, 63$ with the 5$ discount of having my own surfboard.

But they're the only decent speeds around.

Edit: However, I haven't had issues with my connection dropping or service being too inconsistent, it's only if I ever have to call and talk to some cust. rep. that I want to die sooner.

this is because i'ved on <3 mbps my entire life, currently actively ~1.4 thanks to my neighbors XD

fastest speed i've ever seen was my brief stay at the Hyatt regency hotel, upgraded to somewhere around 38 mbps, it was god-like

since i'm looking for a service provider, looking for fast speeds means looking for anything over 20 down, because to me that's really fast :-/

i don't want to go with comcast because all i've heard about how bad they are, i don't want to go with verizon because i've witnessed firsthand how assenine they can be, although AT&T is pretty dumb in the area i'm moving to 50 down for 70 or 80 a month might be my best option

Comcast isn't entirely as bad played up. They may be greedy fucks, screw shit up time to time, but service is actually quite good and stable in my experience 90% of the time. Uverse ifs just as bad as Comcast. There is no real competition in the US to make it otherwise.

maynard <ibis>: they are awkward and last 2 damn long. I prefer thinner smaller ones

have you had to deal with their customer service? i hear that theirs is particularly atrocious.

if only there were a small ISP that would give my small town, or even the place i'm moving to fiber like my SO's town :-/

i was on the phone with hugesnet for a time, too bad the reception from the only other user in town was shit and they put data caps on their service

makes me want to move to Texas or somewhere with google fiber SO bad
just the thought of 1 gig down makes me water at the mouth

I find their CS better than Verizon and AT&T. Deals as well. I'm always in a promotion of sorts. Every 6months you are eligible. I'm on 105 tier for 50$ for 12 months. After that it will drop to 20 tier for another 12 months for 30$, or whatever promotion I pick that is available after. No contract bs. Could things be better and cheaper? Yes. Are other ISPs better? Yes. There is no real competition in MD or the US though.
