I've been here a while on and off - just started to get more active recently. I'll take your advice; I actually wanted to try the ZM server out as I see it's always populated (sometimes even in the early morning hours when GG is dead). But after this and everything I've heard afterwards, I'm terrified to even start initiating the map download and I would really like to.

It is to be taken seriously when multiple people are telling you to stop singing, including an admin. Not everyone wants to hear you sing with an inhaled voice as you continuously hold down your voice transmit key. Not everyone knows how to mute either. Rules are rules, all I'm doing is going by them.
