Yes, the .dem file must be in your cstrike folder. However, you can also press Shift + F2 to open up the menu.

i saw this thread yesterday or the day before but didn't bother reading it; I thought you guys already settled this. Here's a quick demo, it also contains his steam id in the chatbox.
also typing demoui in the console brings up some nifty controls.
