The core i7 laptops at best buy and newegg are pretty pricey.
i did stumble across this one when looking up asus. It's very reasonable for what it's offering.

Processor
Intel® Core™2 Duo
Processor Speed
2.53GHz
You might want to try to shoot for a Quad but if you can't afford it get the duo. The speed is a little slow for me, but you never know with overclocking
System Memory (RAM)
6GB
Type of Memory (RAM)
DDR2
DDR2 isn't something to write home about, look for DDR3. Even if its 4gb of ddr3, thats still better then 6gb ddr2
Hard Drive Type
SATA (5400 rpm)
The speed of that drive will piss you off! I got a Macbook pro with that hdd speed takes about 3 to 5 min to recognize my ipod. Shoot for 7200. 10000 is too much and will burn our your hardware.
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
Video Memory
1GB GDDR3 VRAM
Graphics seem good to me.
A laptop with 2.5 ghz is so unnecessary so its bound to have overheat issues eventually. I built mine purposely for video games, and it's a 1.8 ghz. No issues at all just that it was built 2 1/2 years ago so my memory is really small and running on a Centrino Duo.

I want to be able to game--all types of gaming, from Aion to counterstrike to The Sims. Size is not an issue but 15 inches is too small. I also need a cd/dvd burner (although I'm willing to compromise). And of course to be able to write, research, web surf, watch movies, and be able to withstand back and forth traveling. It needs to not need an upgrade for at least two years, or not go obsolete for more than that--although that can't really be controlled too much considering my price range of no more than 1300.
I don't tend to use laptops on my lap. I've got a desk and so does the school I go to. Reliable wireless is a must. It has to be able to also withstand being turned on and off a lot since I wouldn't leave it on during my hour long commutes back and forth to work and classes and home.
i picked up an asus. they are pretty damn good gaming laptops. i can play everything from MW2 to CSS.
mine came equipped with the best wireless was last year (n or r or something like that) as for durability, mine has spent almost a year in iraq and it still runs like a champ.
best of all i picked up mine for less than a grand! it was on sale but meh it was only like 1100 full price. best buy ftw
