There are lots of examples of anime where manga was still in production, so the anime deviated in a big way from the manga. Full Metal Alchemist (though the new series, Brotherhood, rectifies this), Nausicaa (Manga was half-finished), Akira, KareKano/His and Her Circumstances. In many cases, it isn't always a good thing to deviate from the source.
... also, manga is too expensive for 15 minutes of reading. Unless it's something I want to own to collect or cherish (see: Nausicaa), it's not worth it.
