When you get a new one I have your copy backed up but fyi you should get a 2tb drive to replace it b/c I can assure you that 1tb is not going to cut it.
On a similar note I am looking to possibly build a 12TB RAID 6 as a backup system to ensure that I do not have the same problem you have now. Although I may set it up as a cheep raid 5 to start in order to save money.
(raid 5 allows 1 drive to fail with no data loss, raid 6 can have 2 drives fail at the same time, raid 6 extended supports 3)
Also if you get a new external get one that supports esata plez, it will allow transfers up to 250mps vs the 32 we are caped at for usb or the 120usb3 does right now.
