Thread: need help with mac

    UTE,
you should just let him buy it and learn his lesson.

If it turns out he likes paying more for less.... then it's his choice.
If he does like it, then you should prolly look for a new friend since he's just going to talk about his mac from that point on... and may eat your brains.

Mac doesn't deliver security, other than by virtue of the fact they don't attract enough attention.

Anyone that scoffs at security and leaves their thousand-dollar machine to someone else to protect is, in fact, kind of dumb.

i call bullshit on less-than-20 second boot, My i7 920 doesn't boot Ubuntu that fast, and I have an SSD. And "amazingly fast" is about as relative a term as you can come across

I am saying it is completely fine to NOT stay on top of virus definitions and scans...on a Mac. There are numerous updates each month where apple updates all security on their Mac's. The way apples work is that you LITERALLY have to download AND INSTALL a virus for it to get a virus. You can't just click on a link and BAM BAM BAM pop ups and viruses all over the place like a PC. So as long as you have somewhat of a brain, your Mac won't be getting a virus anytime soon.

LOL @ Macs not attracting enough attention, hence why they don't have virus's. Do you know how many people keep TRYING to create virus's for Macs and keep failing at it? It's easy to give a PC a virus and easy to hack into them...it's a hackers dream to create a virus for a Mac. Too bad apple is smarter than that.

And no, I'm not "kinda dumb" because I let apple protect me instead of...hmm Norton or McAffee? Apple has remained reliable and on top of their security for many, many years without much error...I'd trust that over the fail-cloud that circles 99% of Virus Protection Programs. Half of the time these programs can't even fix the problem and a majority of PC users end up reformatting their HDD. Yeah...have fun doing that.

Just shut-down and re-booted my computer due to a Safari update. 22 seconds timed on my iphone 4 :-) kthxstfu

You can keep replying if you'd like, but until you have owned multiple PCs and Macs...your opinion doesn't even matter because you lack the experience that I do on the matter.

PS - I enjoy when I am playing on the servers with people that know I have a Mac and they ask what my frame rates are and what my graphics are set to. Weird how my numbers are always better than theirs, huh? They always get pissed.

I have, in fact owned multiple macs. I was brought up with a Performa 550 in the house, with the venerable 68030 processor. I even had a II-GS at one time, if you are even old enough to know what that is. I see reasoning with you isn't going to do anything but incite your unreasonable, rabid defense of Apple...so here's a link of a unibody MBP taking nearly 45 seconds to boot, along with a PowerPC macbook, and a Dell MINI9 Hackintosh:

    Clicky

I personally don't have a preference as to what whoever buys what, but I feel obliged to intercede when someone who obviously has no clue or insight into the enthusiast world when they say "You don't have to manage your own security, Apple will take care of you". As a sysad, my business is security. And security applies to everything, UNIX, GNU/Linux in all its flavors, Windows, even your OSX/Darwin/UNIXclone. I would suggest to anyone researching computers (or any technology really) to be careful who you take advice from, especially when they tell you "You're completely safe, some third party that already got your money has your back"
