I actually have faith in Valve as a company that can take on the customer service-heavy role of essentially controlling my digital game library - they've proven themselves in this role. I'm a bit skeptical of EA doing as good a job.
I don't see how Origin is going to drive Steam sales. Steam already has tons of sales, and frequently very good sales. Also, if EA is only selling EA games on Origin, where's the competition? All they're doing is removing the convenient capability to have my digital purchases integrated into Steam. Even if they branch out, how are they going to compete with Steam, other than forcing choice between one or the other? If they both sell the same third party product, the price will be the same, as chosen by the third party. The only benefit I can really see is if (key word IF) competition drives down costs for developers to put their products up for digital delivery through one of the services. That's all fine and dandy, but even then the effect on the consumer is limited.
All that aside, it's another month before BF3 comes out. FML.
