for anime baka is a good private tracker if you join. For everything they do not have like currently airing series I go to the groups site.
What you want to do is create an account here: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=main
Then you can find the series you want to watch and see what groups did it then locate that groups website and find the files there. Here is a list of some decent groups:

http://commiesubs.com/

http://doki.hologfx.com/
http://fffansubs.org/
http://static-subs.com/
Some sites like this give sub reviews: http://www.whiners.pro/
http://coalgirls.wakku.to/ <- only does BD releases
http://fansubdb.com/wiki/Winter_2011 you can see what is airing and who is subbing it.

Back with my last ISP employer, I'd prune the abuse inbox about once a week. Every single cease and desist, "give us everything you know about this person," and "we'll sue you and everyone you know" e-mail - and there were many - was highlighted, and they were all mercilessly deleted. Giving all of these people the finger was the most enjoyable way to end a work week.

Usually I download straight from the fansub... I got a mass of 5 letters at once due to them clinging to one fansub group, they claimed to represent tokyo tv... im like wtf, tokyo tv does not own this show. o.O its distributed by funimation here in the states. Im fairly sure they have no legal right to send letters when its not their property here, though I could be wrong.
as i have worked at a local isp where i'm at, we as a provider can not give out ANY information about a client to any entities without a subpoena even if we wanted to. we have to wait for the subpoena to get to us before we can release information. we got a heads up from the FBI that they wanted information about one of our clients suspected of Child Pornography, so we gathered all the info and once we got the subpoena i delivered the data over to the FBI building here. but yeah without a subpoena, an ISP will not give out info (mostly to prevent lawsuits to themselves).
It is their property... Funimation just "distributes" it in the US.
I got a clump of 4 for Bleach. 4 straight episodes too... lmao. Ignored.
