yes if someone has cancer and can afford treatment, they will be treated. the point you don't understand is, a non-profit is a company. and with companies they have expenses. ie. promotions, to actually raise awareness to get someone to even look into the issue. costs for setting up events, just cause they're non-profit doesn't mean people will let them use a venue for free. also, non-profits are not entities of just volunteers, you can't have some john or jane doe handling the money, balancing the books, coordinating, administering, these are full time positions, i'm sure if people could and live off no income they would gladly give all their time to working at no cost to the cause, but reality doesn't allow for that. you stated you'd rather give your money directly to the sources, fine, do that. but without non-profits raising awareness you wouldn't know about any of it. 'out of sight, out of mind'. and even if you did donate directly to an entity, not 100% of that would go into finding a cure, saving a life or what not, that will also be broken down into administrative costs, maintenance costs, and so on. also, about looking like "a great person." the charities have the option of donating anonymously so you don't have to worry about that.
the money raised from the MS150 actually goes into supplementing costs to people who can't themselves afford treatment, and to look for a cure. and no my statement is right on the point. treating gunshot woulds or whatever, modern medicine just didn't happen over night how do you think the knowledge was gained? it is where it is today, by research, grants, funds, which come from both public and private entities through charity events, fund raising, and non-profits.
i don't know if you're ignorant, naive, or cynical, maybe some of it all to have this view, but seriously i would like to know your in-depth reasons, i've yet to hear your side of this issue, besides all money gathered should go directly to the cause(ideally that'd be great, but as mentioned before, reality doesn't allow)
