September 28, 1972. Paul Henderson scores the greatest goal in sports history.

after doing some digging, i found this: the game was basically russion professionals against the nhl all stars. yes, the canadian team won, but you could expect a pretty damn nice battle from those guys. the 1960 and 1980 usa olympic teams were comprised of amateurs (college guys) and played against the soviet professionals, so i kinda don't see how that goal is the "greatest goal in sports."
not to mention it's hockey. nobody cares about hockey.

Luck on Ice is nowhere near as good as this, as it was just that; luck. The Canadian team was put together only a few weeks before the games started and it was in the off season, back in the days when off season meant not doing a whole lot. It was at the height of the Cold War and was seen as more than just a series, but rather a test of which system was better, the East or the West. The Russians cheated at every chance they could, as is their style in international sports. It's a classic "good guys overcoming bad guys" you see in all the sports movies, except this one is for real. The game was tied, which would have left the series tied, which the Russians were going to claim it as a victory because they made up new rules in the 3rd period of the final game. With only a few seconds left Henderson comes off the bench and scores the goal, Greatest Goal Ever.
I still have Henderson's autograph hanging in my room![]()
