so I'm sitting there on my PC, enjoying my last night off work, playing some skyrim when a half a foot wide electrical flash shoots out the back of my PC followed by a "POP" noise that scares the piss out of me and fries the entire fucking thing.....

I be a sad panda...

And this is why you never skimp on a PSU, ever.

at least I assume your PSU is what did this.

I'm not sure... but the thing has been running for like 5 years now lol... and gamed on quite heavily... it's paid it's dues.... it's just a few days after xmas is a really lame ass time for this 2 happen.

I'm quite sure that most if not all of the PC is totaled... the amount of current that shot out of the PC, and through it was crazy, ive never seen anything like it... it was like this.

yea a good psu should have the safty features that would make it so it only blew that out. hopefuly the rest is fine, might have blown the mobo, depends on what rail blew.

was about to say I had this occur from a very old psu that got too much dust and started a fire but luckily it was a good psu and did not allow the damage to spread to the computer. The real reason for a good psu is that when it does fail b/c they all will at some point it will not take your computer with it. :wtg:

Hopefully some stuff will still work, maybe it just blew the motherboard out.

well if its 5 years old, the CPU isnt worth saving for personal use, same if the ram is ddr2, hopefully you can save the GPU, Disk drive and HDD. Case I assume is unless your looking to get a new one.

Go buy a corsair psu!!! You will most likely end up with a low end psu with that case.

Yea, rambo dont over simply things, Corsiar doesn't make PSUs, they are are all made by seasonic, Delta, and Channelwell (corsair anyways).

For gaming, Dont bother with an i7 maynard, the HT does absolutely nothing, and the chip does not clock higher then an i5.

And get some more info on that PSU, I assume the power cord still works look at getting a antec neo-eco possibly I can look for some deals later on some good PSUs.

i'd say go for an AMD CPU, and put the extra cash into your GPU. for the RAM, i'm a HUGE fan of G-Skill Ripjaws.

I wouldnt say go AMD, as much as I like Vishira and how well it performs compared to bulldozer, the 8 core is a hard sell, i would be likely to recommend a 4300/6300 instead of an i3 though. However it pisses me off no one has tested the two to compare them. I can only go off of the few benchmarks I have seen.
this is the best I got.

Though I would love to see more AMD rigs around, Intel is getting way too complacent. Steamroller unfortunately wont be out until 2014 and considering that haswell is only expected to be a 10% boost, Choosing between amd and intel in 2014 should be a much harder choice.

at the i5 level...

Its hard to recomend AMD for gaming, however for workstation style apps give AMD a good solid look.

Yeah overall I think intel still pulls better with multiple things open but if you are just gaming, and not video rendering or anything silly, you should be able to use a cheaper but same speed AMD.

Pentiums and i3s outperform athlon and phenom IIs, for cheaper.
Trinity APUs are quite awesome though.

That fucking blows. I need to completely clean my hardware and redo my OS, don't have the time. Being locked up in a P-182 for the past 2 years with no cleaning, it's actually remarkably clean.

The PSU that's in it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171036&Tpk=CoolerMaster%20600%20watt%20psu

Decent combo deal, good PSU, good case, go for it. Would be about 180$ separate. For 150$ though, you could get a slightly better case and PSU, not much better though. I'm sure Zero could make tons of cheaper and more efficient combo's for you. Dude knows his shit on cooling and power supply. lol

As Stars said, the i7 is overkill. Get an i5 unless you plan on doing audio, video, or cgi editing.

Fuck a AMD/ATI. Intel/Nvidia all the way. Best idea yet, give me you monies and let me have the new PC, you can have my old one.... lol

Yea thats one of the few CM psus that arnt terrible. Still its CM and as a rule of thumb avoid them all together for PSUs, while there are a few gems(well... scratched up gems) its not worth trying to pick them out.
600W is the peek rating on that PSU, not its normal 24/7 max output so treat the PSU as a 500W. There are better PSUs for the same price or cheaper price of that CM one. I assume its a combo deal your looking at though and if the deal is good enough Its alright to go for it.

Yeah don't forget about that. The newest shit will have the most bugs in it obviously so if you can go with something a little slower but something that has all the kinks already worked out it will perform better overall (no BSOD's or the like).
