So i have some plans for when i return home, these plans consist of building Gaming pc and a server. I have been disconnected from the world for a pretty long time now and am completely lost regarding up to date PC parts and the such.
So i wish to propose a game. For anyone interested, all you have to do is create a wish list. This wish list will consist of everything you would need to build a Gaming PC and a server. This wish list will take into count, accessories. Your personal spending budget for this wish list project is $4000. Anyone who posts a wish list will have my utmost gratitude as you will be helping me make a pretty hefty purchase.

Would you prefer to invest more in your server or your gaming rig? What will the server be used for?

here are my two suggested builds for your current situation
gaming PC: win7 using i2p bridged virtual box to get through plus an upgraded cooling system (fig. 1) to deal with the extreme temperatures. includes cd player so you can listen to your laser disks with your friends. 1 usb port and you had better hope it has wireless.
fig 1:7270
server: built to local standards, power supplied by iranian nuclear reactor (fig. 2) aka an array of batteries. secured by patriot technology, only allowing maybe 3 or 4 nerds to sit and stare in frustration, this server is equipped with the military grade security suite Norton Internet Security Suite 2003, rejecting any security threat/breach to a 131dB loop of madonna's lucky star simultaneously running a high powered degaussing field on your personal computer and exploding a glue pack.

with your buget you can go intel, the i5 will give you more stable performance.
WHY THE FUCK are you getting a 32inch 1080p screen (also you want 120 hz for 3d not 60)? past 24 You really want to look at upping the resolution. If your looking @ 30 inch screens (1440p) give a good look at catleap.
If im goign to spend 100 dollars on a keyboard. I want a mechanical board as simple as that.
Also you have no GPU in that list.

No GPU? then what is this.. 1 SAPPHIRE 100352-2L Radeon HD 7950? <---like seriously.
Id like to stick AMD as i am familiar with AMD processors.
as for the TV, i dont really plan to use the 3D. It was simply one of the better 32 in LEC tvs i could find on newegg. Link me to something you were talking about?
what do you mean by mechanical keyboard? lol if what you mean is programmable keys, the one on my list is a 18 Gkey. then again i have may have no idea what the hell i am talking about.

Mechanical keyboards are just keyboards that instead of rubber domes underneath each of the keys, there's an actual mechanical switch. They feel much nicer to type on and are more responsive than regular keyboards. They run from around $70 up to a couple hundred.

like this? As far as "Mechanical" keyboards go? lol the one in my list i already have... just alot of keys stick from aqll the spilt whiskey over the years.
After browsing monitors.. to get the size i want (32in) id be paying double, almost triple what the TV would cost. Worst case scenario, i dislike the TV for gaming, then use it for well a tv and instead of buying another TV for my new place i purchase a monitor

@ 32inches for a desk space use I find 1080p is not adaquite.
TVs are behind in color quality as well, But if you think it will work for you go for it. Its just not something I would ever care to do.
The k90 is sorta mechanical, its all mechanical but the programable keys, and I think the 9 key.
If you go to even a walmart (the one around here has it) they might have a black widow for you to try. Or look at a best buy.

Well I cant imagine anyone being unhappy with mechanical keys. the reds do feel nice, I just have a hunch that I myself would prefer brown switches and have not run into a store where I can try both.

I am not sure if the second part was in relation to my post or not but I thought this was for 2 different computers. My post is only for the parts for the server. I would recommend RAID 6 and run a 60GB SSD for the OS on the box. For the raid it is really easy shit with that card you can even set up the raid over your browser from a second computer via the network connection on the back of the card!!
You just select the drives you want and the raid level and then wait for it to build and your ready to go! From then on if a drive breaks just replace it with a new one and the system will restore all your data after it rebuilds. In the case of RAID 6 you can lose 2 drive at a time without data loss.

I would just use windows to keep things simple actually I would even use win 8 b/c it has better tech for dealing with NTFS volumes (ie improved checkdisk) and is thus the better choice for keeping your data safe.

Also can you link me to a hard drive you were talking about "The ones that work well with raids." how many HDD's do you think i should start with?
Also, is there a reason you didnt use server specific RAM and M/B's? Id like more ram, 16g would be nice.

I REALLY want to respond to this Mikey, as I just built my gaming rig in December and I'm pretty well versed on pricing/performance ratios on what's available right now. Give me today and tomorrow and I'll post specs I'd recommend within your price range - for every component you'll require.

It is just a file server so it does not need a lot of ram or cpu, it just needs to be able to run a raid card and have dual gigabit connectivity. This selection of parts is of lowest cost to save money for the 2 parts that matter most, the raid card and the HDDs.
For the HDDS models like Deskstar (I do not believe in production any longer) WD Black and Ultrastar are the lines to look at. RE is a WD enterprise line for raid explicitly but is very expensive. Make sure that you do not get anything other than 7200rpm or above.

For your monitor you will only want to buy ones that support lightboost so you can get the best motion image quality possible.

Alright guys, im going to come right out and say it. Im fucking lost as far as server hardware goes. Please note that i am committing all my free time here to learn as much as i can, so your advice here will not be in vain. Here is what id like to run when i get home, so that you server experts know what i should start putting together.
1 8 slot Minecraft server for testing mods ect.
1 100 slot Minecraft server, moderate mods.
Id like it to have minor room for upgrading when i gain more knowledge.
Server budget is about $1,300.
Please help!
According to minecraft:

folding @ home people know where to get really cheap server parts.
For 45 players they are recommending 30Mbps internet. You can meet the server specs cheep but the issue is do you actually have the bandwidth at your house for this!?
$399 512GB SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148444
$204 3.1GHz Quad Xeon: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115084
$199 Supermicro m/b: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253
$139 16GB ECC (required by m/b): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139979
$89 2TB OS/backup drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834
$99 Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112316
$59 400W PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703034
$1188 total before discounts (some items have promos right now and rebates not counted above
This leaves the rest of your money for OS ect. Your motherboard has integrated IPMI so no GPU ect is needed as it can be controlled remotely via lan/internet. You might need to swap one in there to configure shit but I am not sure as I have never personally worked with real server level gear.
All of the above meets and or exceeds the recommend requirements for your minecraft servers on a hardware level. These parts also represent the highest quality to ensure continuous operation. You may wish to spend some of the extra money on upgraded fans or cpu HT or even a small WC system for silent 24/7 operation.

Move to where you can get Google fiber. Pay $70 for gigabit up/down
I just want to point out that you could host the largest minecraft server on earth if you got this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182346 and this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239425

Look its the best mic under 100 dollars. I dont care if you can (you cant) plug in a 1 dollar POS mic to a dac and get better sound. the price of a dac like that would be leaps and bounds more expensive and the POS mic would still sound bad.

Sound quality: 9/10. Surround sound feature is very close to having a 7.1 setup, clarity is excellent and bass levels are surprisingly deep. Mic quality: 9/10. I've had folks say it sounds great and never had a complaint. The boom is a little large for my tastes, hence the one point deduction. Comfort level: 9/10. Pads fit perfectly over my ears and are close to noise cancelling - you don't want these if you need to hear what's going on around you while gaming! They're a bit bulky though, so minus one point. Wireless reliability: 8/10 Points deducted because 'power save mode' is annoying and is the default and because you will occasionally (once every five hours) lose signal for three seconds. Note, however, that if it's plugged in via USB, it works just like a wireless headset. Battery life: 10/10. I've had five hour gaming sessions and the battery barely went below half charge.
Side note, this set is on sale regularly for $80 and is well worth that price. Beats the overpriced $250 Turtle and other 'elite' brands in my opinion in terms of quality, making the value kind of staggering.

Ah, I didn't look at your cart. In that case, I completely disagree with the assessment that it's 'a waste of money.' Hands down the best headset I've ever owned, and if wireless is important to you (it is to me!) it's the best value on the market, period. With my setup, I've got my PC hooked to my 60" LCD TV, so when I abandon my computer chair and head to the couch to game from time to time, the wireless is an absolute must have.
They continue to update and improve the software as well, and since I have mine set to automatically update, I sometimes randomly sit down to better performance/new features, which is nice, haha.
I have that, I love it.
Zero seems to hate it though because its digital....
Look its the best mic under 100 dollars. I dont care if you can (you cant) plug in a 1 dollar POS mic to a dac and get better sound. the price of a dac like that would be leaps and bounds more expensive and the POS mic would still sound bad.
A decent DAC is already in your motherboard if it was made in the last 5 years for FREE

Given how much shit I know that thing will actually sound compared to what I am using if that is a 9/10 in sound quality than what do I have 50/10. This is a fucking joke, even what I have is maybe a 7.5/10 and that is when combined with a good DAC/AMP. A fucking wireless headset could not ever in a million fucking years be better than 2/10 then you get fake marketing bs tossed in within it your kidding me.
Also did I just hear better performance from head set driver updates!? Are you telling me that these things actually effect fps now!?

Zero most people dont buy 300 plus dollar mobo. Nearly all still use Reltek.
Hell all I have is a xonar DG and thats better then my p67 pro sound, and thats higher end then most people get.
A blue snowball is the best mic your going to find under 100 bucks.

Realtek "3d" sound caused cs:s to crash constantly. It took me a year to figure out the cause as there was no technical support that solved the isssue.

Jesus Zero, did I hit a nerve? LOL It's not like I'm comparing wavelengths to determine which tweeter set will hit the highs and lows with exactly the right pitch. I'm drawing off of my own experience with headsets, both wired and wireless - and the G930 has the second best sound I've ever heard in a headset, the best sound of any 'surround' headset I've tried. Again, this is my experience and nothing more. If you've tried hundreds of headsets to determine which is 'the best,' you're certainly a more informed critic than I am.
For $80, no, you're not going to get the 'unbelievably rich and undeniably superior' performance of a Bose headset. But let's face facts - the human ear, just like the human eye, is only able to detect so much minutia in sound. Beyond a certain point, much like with screen resolution and refresh rates and frames per second, you're talking technical terms, not what it actually does to your comprehension of the sound.
I in no way suggested the headset would improve FPS. You drew that conclusion when apparently I pissed you off by endorsing my headset. LOL What I did say was that Logitech releases software updates to the headset software (which allows you to control options on the device) that periodically improve the headset's performance, not your PC's performance. I suppose I should have clarified myself a bit better.
At any rate, I recommend this headset, despite Zero's condemnation of it. :smirk:

Enough with your petty squabbles! Im sticking with the 930 headset. why? so i have something wireless to set further away while watching movies or playing xbox. As far as quality headphones and a mic, my father is a professional musician, im sure he will sell me some of his stuff. talking $50,000 worth of equipment...
now, to what is most importent regarding my $4000 budget. A DESK, a very nice gaming DESK! help... i plan on having 2 laptops and a 32in TV on this desk.

To suggest a desk you would need to provide some basic information about how much space you have, location (corner, against a wall, middle of room), chair type, your height (yes this matters, do consider your health if you are going to buy something long lasting), prefence on cable management, slide out keyboard or not, etc.

A desk has become my next PC purchase as well. Sadly, I've seen nothing that appeals to me or seems geared toward 'the gaming PC user.' Everything I find in stores and online is geared toward productivity.
Long story short, I have no advice to offer. Sorry mang. :(

alrighty then! The only issue is that i have not yet been to where ill be moving into when i get home. lol but based off the floor plan and pictures im sure i can make it work. Im a handy guy, modifying wont be a problem. ok lets start.
The desk will need to fit in a corner.
Pull out keyboard
Cable management would be nice but can live without it. (DIY cable management)
My height: 5'11 / 71in
I prefer sitting in a chair that is no more then 2 feet off the ground, so that i have support for my elbows to help support my wrists while gaming.
i prefer enough room on each side of me to place things ect.
i like long walk on the beach
my sexual orientation is straight.

Well, since I can't help with the desk, maybe I can help with the seating. If you're interested in a new chair, I HIGHLY recommend this one. Affordable, comfortable and adjustable, it rivals chairs that cost twice as much. It has done wonders for my lower back pain. My only gripe is, at least on my particular chair, sometimes the back loses its angled setting, resulting in you falling back with a sudden jolt and a necessary readjustment. Other than that, it has been perfection, and it really only happens when I lean back too quickly/with too much force.

LOL That looks awesome. Also looks like I'll need a second mortgage on my house to afford it!
On a note about chair expense, if you buy a chair that costs $60, expect to buy another chair in less than a year (unless you want to sacrifice comfort/your back). The chair I linked to will easily last you five if taken care of, probably longer, and will be commmmmmm-fy. Consider how often you find yourself in front of your PC in your computer chair - makes the decision to spend a little more a no brainer.

ok, im back to reality. i can only think of three things left to purchase. I am sure i can find a decent chair for free. Most people are not aware of how expensive they are and through them out during fall move outs.
So all that is left is a desk and a video capture card.
I want a video capture card or what ever hardware for my other Desktop PC so i can stream live games. (i plan on taking all my ranting and rage and making videos for all to lawl at.)
