View Full Version : Journal Feature?

*ahem*

I'm very interested in seeing if people would like a journal feature implemented here. I have seen it pulled off quite successfully in other gaming forums (link (http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/journal.php)), and I really think it encourages people to be more active in the forums in general. When people have something they can call their own, they're more likely to come around. It might also remove some of the spam from the threads.

I have no idea how big of a project this would be though, so I understand it might not even be an option. And there are of course some downsides to having journals (you could argue that it might pull attention AWAY from the actually threads), but I imagine it could be a useful tool in causing this community to grow.

Gosh, I just feel like I gave a political speech or something. THEREFORE, YOU SHOULD ALL VOTE FOR ME.

your link is broken.

also... isnt' myspace/facebook/livejournal around for that crap. I'm sure ppl here don't want to updated another site just for their journal. :)

I prefer reading random and pointless posts b/c they get soo much flame/drama

Link fixed. (Thanks.)

And yup, I suppose that's a valid consideration. It might make it a helluvalot easier to get to know people on here, though. And people could just ignore the journal portion of the forums if they wanted to (I think a good handful of people in the gaming site I linked to just stick to the forums anyway).

The page is a little busy, but the actual journal feature looks promising. People can respond to entries as comments, almost like a blog.

I am supremely offended. If I wanted you to know about my adventures in the Red Light District I'd direct you to my porn page "Scrubbleboo is alone at home with someothing phallic" Thank you dear sir.

If it is related to the community, then I think it may be a good idea.

If it has to do with personal life, then no way. This isn't the "ibis personal crapola community."

This isn't the "ibis personal crapola community."

A few members of the community seem to disagree with this ideology. AND it makes for great entertainment! I say keep the "personal" shit coming. Makes me chuckle.

well I kinda like the Idea. RedvsBlue.com community had a simple journal system. And alot of people used for different things. Some for neat things they found on the internet others for ranting and yes some did even use it like the twitter crap and told there life day by day but you never had to read them. They even had a subscription thing for journals. I personal like seeing new funny pictures a person found and some other the artwork they did. But it would keep the thread nonsense down like the hole contest thing with getcha and when people make a thread an there was already similar thread out there that they didn't know that Since has long disappeared. Example like the one with my voice i made its already like 3 and 4 pages back an i though i made that just last week. but it would be easy to find in a journal if they wanted to no more about me.

PS. Getcha I'm not hating on you but its goin nowhere fast

Basically I'm thinkin' that people might be like me and have random shit to say that wouldn't make sense in a thread. For example, I'd love to tell you about my cat barfing all over the couch and coffee table.

This story would fit perfectly in a thread like this:http://www.ibisgaming.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2096

The easiest way for me to do it would be to enable the blog feature in Vb this would create a blog space in users profiles. You could view the peoples blog by visiting their profile. Here is an example: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/blogs/

Meh, I'm not gonna lie to ya, the other forums weren't myspace-y at all, despite the journals. Journals /= myspace.

Lol.. I was just about to say..

Don't turn this into facebook or myspace.

What would be the real point of journals or blogs? Whatever you'd call them.. Zero posts any news/updates, so it wouldn't be for that.

But I drew a roflcopter on my jar of applesauce. And now there's nowhere to put it.

Wow, I can see that I'm really helping my case, here.

Edit: Okay, sounds like people are really on the fence. Is there any chance there could be some sort of trial period? A couple of weeks? And then re-poll? Or would that be too messy? Like I said, I have no idea what adding a journal system would entail for Zero, and I definitely wouldn't want him to have a lot of work just for a stinkin' trial period. But if it were a fairly cut-and-dry thing...

If worst comes to worst, we could make a thread in discussions called "Journal" or "Random Things" or "Blog" where we could blog. Only rules (aside from the agreed-to forums rules) are: no flaming, no spamming, no immature name-calling, only blogging and commenting.

I have no problem with it, but I don't see the point.

Other than to talk about random things, or give details about someone's day or something..

But we basically do that anyways, except it isn't always public, and most the time when it is, it diverts everyone from the starting subject.

Exactly! I think that journals would help eradicate this problem.
