well what do you want to do in the service? you wanna cook, fly, rifleman, bosun mate?

Depending what you want to do and your asvab score, Alot of things open up.

Talk to the recruiters to get info but dont be alarmed if they try to sign you right then and there. dont sign anything for meps until you find what you want out of them.

I for one am a boom operator out of a KC-135 Stratotanker in the Air Force. I love my job but its not made for everyone.

It would be nice to be in a medicine field but i m not sure if thts even wht i wanna do. from my point of view it would be awesome to fly but it also it would be as awesome to drive a tank. at this point i m trying to get out of the house i m living in and be all on my own while making moves tht will decide wht the rest of my life is like. so i m trying to hear difrent point of views about marines/airforce/navyseals/army/national guard and all

I don't regret signing with the Army. The Army always has jobs available and guarantee you that the job you pick at MEPS will be yours. In the Navy, they open up their jobs only in the beginning of the month, so you won't have as much opportunity to pick a job you want. The Marines, you pick 3 jobs at MEPS and after their Bootcamp, which ever one of the three are open is the one you get. So there is no guarantee you will get the job you want. If all 3 are not open, you will get one that is open and one you didn't have on your list. Also... Marines have a cutoff height of 6'6 (which is dumb) and you can't have any tattoos below your bicep I think? Basically the 4 finger rule. My friend who was in Air Force enjoyed her career in the Air Force and I almost joined the Air Force, but I want to get dirty. The Army isn't afraid to get dirty. National Guard is funded by the state. You stay at home. Reserves you can either stay or go somewhere else if you request. Active (which is what I chose) you go where they tell you. More jobs are available in Active, and I recommend that if your still in school but have no idea what your gonna do... maybe Active is something you want to consider.

Your job selection will be based on your ASVAB, medical PUHLES, and any special courses you took (trig, algebra) I ended up getting 74D which is basically a Chemical, Biological Radiological Nuclear Specialist. In short a Chemical Engineer. I will be dealing with WMDs and shit. I got this job because of certain math classes I took. So when you meet with your Army counselor at MEPS, take a look at all jobs opened to you (and you will get more opened to you because you are a male).

Also, do you have college credits or a degree or obtaining one? With a bachelors college degree you will promote automatically to an E-4. So I am technically a Specialist in the Army (as it states on my Future Soldier Army Card). If not you will start off as an E-1 Private. Pass your PT test before you leave for Basic and you will get to E-2 Private. You can get promoted again in Basic and then you will get to E-3 Private First Class. I don't know how it is in the other branches, but that is how the Army does it. After E-3 it'll be 2 years before you can get promoted again. Talk to a recruiter. My two recruiters are like my best friends. Only one of them is a pretty shady fuck. But most recruiters have your intentions in mind. Good Luck.

well, your job opportunity
with the army, are not fated on weather or not you go active or not.

Step 1: GoArmy.com and find the careers section. It wont have all the jobs but most

step 2: find one you would be interested in. then find a back up one JUST in case, but it is very unlikley

step 3: ask your recruiter who will buy you free lunch mmmm yumm, ask him what you need to do and what is required for the job you wish to have

step 4: sign your ass up

these steps apply for any service as well

I'm actually talking to an old college roommate who transfered to MMA (Maine Maritime Academy) in hopes of joining the coast guard. Right now he is on a ship just off the coast of italy and I guess he's been to a couple places in africa, spain, and the works.

Yes it is. There is a few jobs that are available to Active only. Include 42B, 18C, 18D, 89B, 13W, 13S, 13P, 12D, 89D, 18X (special forces), and I can name more. Even recruiters tell you before wanting to enlist Reserve, Guard, or Active that certain jobs come with limitations to each specific division. Active will always have more opportunities (more jobs)

any branch will do. some might not take you, but others will. just go for which branch offers the best opportunity.

loka, you're technically a DEP recruit (e-nothing), then a recruit (e-1) until you're out of boot. you're a specialist once you're promoted to specialist and you actually have to make it through boot camp to be promoted at all. don't jump the gun; there are people that can't handle boot.

actually the rank system dosnt work like that in the army. i was an e2 going into basic training and an e3 when i finished. once you sign the dotted line you are a pv1. you arnt mosq'd but your still an e1. but i do agree, your really not a soldier til your done with boot.

ritalin if you are interested in the army send me a pm, i worked with the recruiters for a bit and helped loka out when she was signing up.

and whichever branch you choose, best of luck

Pretty much all branches have the same jobs, just a few maybe not available to some (usn, nuke)

If jobs aren't an issue, then just look at their deployment tables(?). I know in the navy you normally have a 2yr shore and 3yr sea tour rotation... and being on a boat produces some very different experiance (good/bad).

I'm not sure about the other branches.

But rumor is that the Air Force has the best standard of living.

But while talking to recruiters, have them buy you lunch, they got government credit cards just for that reason. AND TALK TO ALL OF THEM if you're not sure what you want.

And when dealing with recruiters, treat as car sales men... you may even want to take a lawyer with you, lol.

you sure they didn't back pay you as an e2? i'm pretty sure every branch you are an e-1 all through boot camp. you get back payed for whatever rank your 'supposed' to be.

How it works in the Marines is you get paid whatever you signed the contract to be in boot camp. For example if it says e-1 paygrade you will get that.
Most people will be privates and PFCs. (You can be a contract PFC if you have college credits.)

right, but technically you get back payed for whatever it says above e-1. i know they say you get paid while in but it definitely is back pay right after boot. read your LES after boot (if you still have it) and you will notice they pay you some odd amount that equals the difference of e3/2 - e1 pay.

loka, jigsaw is probably right about your job outlook. that's just how things work.

here is how it works.

upon going to a recruiter, we will want to know if you wish to leave right away, or do RSP or future soldier programms. this stuff gives a jumpstart before going to basic blind folded.
it also has some promotional benifits as well

if loka is starting as a specialist, she will go to basic wearing that rank when she gets there, BUT drill sergeants will consider every one a worthless piece of shit private tell you graduate, becoming a soldier.

any ways. what ever rank you are when you leave for basic, will be the pay grade you get paid during training.

the only reinbursments i can think of after you finish are BAH miss ups. Family Seperation pay. BAS ect.

First of all, kudos to you for even considering it. I respect anyone who goes into the military, no matter what branch.

As it happens, right now I am working on PT prepping myself for enlistment into the Air Force. I want to be TACP (possibly ALO if I get my bachelor's while in the service). I spent a lot of time thinking about the branch and job that I wanted, so my first advice would be to take time to figure out which branch fits you best, and figure out which job(s) you're interested in.

Do you have a clean background? Certain branches are less likely to give waivers. The Army is most likely to take you if you need one.

The branch that's right for you is impossible for anyone here to tell you. If you like being out to sea, you could join the Navy - but then again, not all Navy jobs are on the seas. If you like flying (you seem to have some interest in it), consider the Air Force - but just as the Navy, not all jobs in the AF are airborne - and you could land a job on a helicopter in the Army. Actually, remarkably few of the jobs in the AF are airborne. For example, TACP is essentially a specialized Army role - one of the grittiest jobs in the AF, next to CSAR. There are also a lot of entirely non-combat jobs in most branches. It all depends on what you're looking for.

You say you're currently training to be a nurse - have you considered AF pararescue? If you're in (very) good shape, a good swimmer, and have an interest in medicine, flying, and being generally bad-ass, that could be a great fit for someone like you. I'm not an especially good swimmer, nor particularly interested in medicine, or I'd probably go for it.

As has already been said, if you have questions about enlistment in any branch, the most likely person to have an answer is your local recruiter.

Basically I signed my contract and it read this

Branch: Active Army
Paygrade: E-4

Very aware I will wear the rank of Specialist at Basic Training as well as earn a bit more (but not the same pay as an E-4 until after I graduate bootcamp) as it was repeatedly told by my recruiter, Army Guidance Counselor and numerous friends who went in higher ranked than Private, but I am still considered a private and turd in the eyes of the Drill Sergeant until I officially earn my rank and graduate which is PERFECTLY fine by me.

& Apparently Army is the only branch I know of who has recently changed it to where they have made it easy to rank up from an E-1 Private to an E-3 Private First Class based on the DEP (Delayed Enlistment Program), because my cousin in Navy never ranked until after bootcamp.

No the DEP program is the same for Navy. I was E-3 when I signed my papers. However I didn't wear my stripes until graduation day. I was back paid for bootcamp to make up the difference of E-1 to E-3 pay after wards as well.

loka
08-06-2010, 01:32 AM
That's the difference then. From how it was explained to me, I get a bit more pay from what I was looking at from what the E-1's-E-3's get paid in Basic. It was also explained to me I would not be back paid which is fine, because I would be earning more anyways. There is a female in my recruiting station who is going in as a 1st LT. So does this mean she would be wearing a black band around her arm to show she is technically an officer?
