BEST HEADSET - Discuss

Going to buy a new headset cuz Creative won't resolve my issues with the TWO sets of Fatality Pro I have that won't work on Win 7 for some reason, Sooo,, please consider yourself invited to share your opinions for Windows 7 ONLY headsets (w/ mic) and why they're the best, etc.

Honestly the best headset is no headset. The quality of a good set of headphones will always be better and does not require drivers. In addition the mics are basically going to be the same if your running a newer motherboard. So just buy a 3.5mm mic and your set.

Is there any reason why you want a head set or do you just think that this is what you need? The best solution from the perspective of quality, value and compatibility is to just buy a separate mic and headphone that do not require drivers.

As far as being able to hear things from different directions you just need something that has a good sound stage. The larger the sound stage the easier it is to determine distances when gaming. A good set of headphones that have a real sound stage will beat those gimmick surround sound monstrosities any day.


Lastly do you know how much money your looking to spend?

When it comes to the best headset, I always trusted skull candy. I bought a headset from them with built in bass for $80. The sound was amazing and when I used it in pub it helped me hear little details that would tell me where my enemies were coming from. This one didn't include a mic (bought it at an airport store) but if you check their website I am pretty sure they sell ones with them.

i also have a set of logitech headphones, cost me 20$ and while it has gone through some physical wear, the sound quality is still amazingly good for the price. also, the sound quality of the mic itself never seems to fail. i dont know what model it is though

I have multiple reasons for wanting a good headset. To name a few:
-Want to exclude any extraneous sounds
-Want to be able to be considerate of the volume of game sounds to others both at home and in motels
-Want to extrapolate the sounds/direction when playing online games for any advantage ( I need all the help I can get! :P)
-Lastly, I want to have a mic that there will be no feedback on as I have tried the speaker/mic scenario and I think it sux all the way around for tons of reasons

As far as price goes, that's not really an issue. Anything under $100.00 or so is fine by me as long as it's high quality. I don't think there's reason to spend much more (just started my research) unless they can perform "other" functions.. :smirk:

I am currently using the Sennheiser PC150 (replaced by the PC151), which has no fancy features, just a simple 2.0 headset with noise-canceling mic. It is roughly 5 years old, and I have never had any issues. Of course, it is a 3.5mm connected headset, so if you want the USB sister model, the PC166, you have to pay almost $100 more (that is also an open-backed set, which I can only imagine reduces isolation).

I can almost guarantee you that no other brand will touch the audio quality of a Sennheiser headset at the same price range.

Plantronics is well known for high quality headsets.

Basically all your going to get is convenience with a headset though. As far as other sounds go that all comes down to your sound card. I have used the same $2 desktop 3.5mm mic for 10 years without any problem, the quailty has improved over the years as better sound cards (ie integrated cards) helped remove background noise. Then once again nothing will ever beat audiophile grade headphones in quality and as long as they have a big sound stage. Then your quality is basically dependent on your DPS and a motherboard dsp is going to be better than anything built into a usb headset.

Once again note that for the price you could get much better headphones and just buy a $2 mic.

Also do not try to cry about price after you asked for the best. You want a headphone with a mic attached to it and the price of a decent set of headphones costs over $200 so logically it will cost a lot more than that to buy the best headset.

Eugh, Plantronics is well known for quality? I've gone through 4 of their headsets and none lasted more than 6 months cause the cable connection was shit.

Beyer makes some kickass stuff for an absurd price. I would definitely not spend $300+ on a headset for games, though. I'd rather have a new video card.

There are two problems with desktop mics. First, you need a place to put it (unfortunately I do not have that, small desk + 2 monitors). Second, the place you put it needs to be in a position where it will pick up your voice clearly and without background noise, which is much harder to accomplish than with a headset mic. Anyone familiar with recording knows the significance of distance in relation to signal-to-noise ratio, and that $2 desktop mic isn't exactly going to be up to the standard of a quality super/hyper-cardioid condenser mic for clean, accurate voice recording at a distance - and if there's one thing I can't stand, it's someone with a noisy or garbled mic.

I bought two sets of logitech headsets. Both of which had connection issues in the right ear. No abuse or anything I took good care of them. One of them only lasted a month. I returned them both to walmart for 80 dollars and got a turtle beach headset for 60. I love it, I can tell direction better than ever and they are very comfortable.

My point was that for his use the quality of the headphones should be much much more important than having an amazing mic. He is only trying to have his voice heard without background noise and a cheep $2 mic will do just that. As far as having a place to set it you can buy a clip on mic that works well too.

The other important note is those people with "crappy" mics are usually using more expensive usb mics or headsets. Basically all mics <$50 that people are buying for these purposes are the same quality wise. What is making the difference is the DSP they are connected to followed by the local EMI followed by there configuration.

As far as Plantronics goes this was in reference to their higher lines that used to be very popular in the pro leagues back when I was in cal.

I really love my Razer Megalodon...

Then again it's around $150. I've run into exactly 0 problems. It's built like a tank and can take some abuse. I know we all try to take care of our expensive electronics, but this one can really stand up to the occasional mishap. I've dropped them, stepped on them, and the like, and they still are 100% perfect. The chord is protected by a woven cover, rather than the standard plastic. This means it is a TON more durable, and is able to flex a lot more. The 7.1 surround is virtual, however it is also extremely good. You can adjust it to 5.1, 4.1 or you can flip it to 2.1 if you want based on the circumstance. You can also adjust each "virtual" speaker in the 7.1 setup individually in regards to sound output. Once I got things where I wanted them- I can hear everything I need to exactly when I need to. It's also optimized to bring out the frequencies used by video games like CSS, MWF, and BC2 for bullet cases dropping, reloads, footsteps, etc to give you a very clear picture on where, exactly, the enemy is.

The Mic is also extremely good, and very clear. It took some adjustment from the old boom mike I used back in on my last setup- but it's the clearest Mic I've used so far on my computer. I've used it to actually record a things for demos. The sensitivity is incredible, and there's none of that traditional echo you get with a new set-up. It's all very automatic, and very good.

The only drawback is that the drivers and everything are on the pod that comes with it. This means no driver updates, and no built-in equalizer. You can, however, do such things manually. I use it to listen to music, as well. With proper adjustments the balances are actually quite good. It's pretty steep, but you definitely get an amazing headset for that money. Also, since it's USB you can have games use it and have music running through other speakers.

i tried litterally a million headsets before, have been using my current logitec G330 headset for over a yr.
i accidentally sat on it 5 times in its lifetime, squished it and tied it with it own wire to fit it in my jacket every day of the week for over a yr, and it still annoys the fuck out of everyone on the server who hears my voice lol
jk but seriously, for a 50$ headset (last yr, now it should be no more than 30 bucks), this headset is ridiculously NICE, gd sound, never had trouble with it , VERY comfortable for the ear... the best i;ve had so far, bcos u can swivel the back of the headset to find the perfect spot behind ur neck and rest there ,,, ur mic isnt annoyingly pressed to u , u can rotate it in all 3 dimensions, oh and the headband itself can extend so that it accomodates a thick skull, if that matters to u :P
it comes with a mic on/off switch and best of all, it allows u to either use regular audio jacks for when u use an ipod or ur speaker output, and also has a usb jack that actually contains its OWN sound card, so if u sound card on ur pc got fucked or disabled (sometimes they do that at work or university or library laptops), u can still hear through ur own sound card, and its gd quality!!!

only problem i ever had with it was trying to watch a low voiced tv series in my living rooom on thanksgiving day:P
i could still hear the series fine, but couldnt filter out my aunt's annoying high pitched voice:P but other than that, it works just fine to listen to smthn...

PS: i wear this headset more than 10 hours a day.... i never had any headacke or pain or any kind of trouble with it , very smooth on the head:P

I really like the Plantronics GameCom 777's. 5.1 surround sound, a good mic, and after you break them in pretty darn comfy IMO. On newegg atm they are around $70.

Well, I'm glad that I started this post because I came across a neat little jewel that got me my 2 pair of Creative Fatality Pro headsets back!!!

No thanks to Creative who did absolutely nothing for me! At least during the perusal of the different links posted here, I found a $10.00 item that allows me to use the headsets I bought a few years ago and am verry happy with!
