Thread: Can an expert explain THIS kind of lag for me?

problem is that my lags are completely random as fuck, sometimes i have amazing gameplays (so amazing that i cant even control my mouse jitter bcos of how sensitive everything is when it's working perfectly), but then sometimes i start lagging and skipping frames at low impacts, such as my motion being a bit "iffy"... and then there are THOSE days like the demo above, where everything just goes fuck-all...

so i need to wait it out, see if i notice any patterns between my lags and my universal pc/router/internet/isp/game state.
How old is your router? I had one that was a couple years old and I had issues with random disconnects and lag. Assuming your isp isn't throttling shit and you're getting your 30 mb/s then the problem is some of the hardware in between.

Something else you could try is to check and make sure there are no more updates for you to download. Specifically any updates for you netowrk adapter.

this reminds me, a faulty netwrok card can cause all kinds of havoc

it seems to me that since your lag isn't just a tad bit of slow down (at least the way i read it) and it's either hit or miss then it sounds like network lag, if it were your machine lagging then the game would just get slower (with exceptions of course)

and i didn't mean move it across the country, just maybe if you have a friend a town over ask to take your tower with you to do some tests, maybe host a bit of a LAN? nevertheless that's still the most unlikely of it all

my gut tells me its your router/modem or network card, it just FEELS like it's one of those, though without seeing the slow down hands-on (through video recording, rather than source recording, there IS a difference :-/ ) then it'd be hard to tell

what I would do, personally, is set up a dual-monitor display get desktop gadgets from here:

    All CPU Meter
    Network Meter
    GPU Meter
    and Drives Meter

i have these meters on my desktop at all times and anytime there is lag on any media i can tab to my desktop and almost immediately tell what it is that's lagging me

if i were you i'd put these graphs on the second display while playing, when you lag see what graphs spike (if any) if none then have a command prompt window up and do ping -t www.google.com (or whatever) and see if the stream of packets cuts out when you lag

i only reccomend the gadgets coz they're easier than bringing up the resource manager each time, the GPU meter requires a bit o software depending on your graphics card, but all of those gadgets are close to my heart and have been a source of great information in a time of crysis with my computer

hope you get this figured out

and the honest to God reason why i posted those, is not about the bragging, but about the "sarcasm" factor, where I believe my rig is more than above average for CSS, and yet i keep getting this lag....
people then tell me "sure cyber, lag... didnt u just get a new gear and shit?"
or worse, when they tell me "oh it's <insert name of part>", and they simply dont know that everything is brand new and top of the line... and they don't believe me, so i was being sarcastic at my situation ...

just watch the demo guys and tell me what to work on fixing ? please and thank you.

locust and milkster, any more elaboration on your votes?
Oh yeah you're a mexican't. You paid in pesos. No wonder you lag. Kncok offs too just like everything in mexico. Cyber I have concluded that if you stop being mexican your problems will be fixed.

cyber, did you do a tracert?

no? Install and use this http://winmtr.net/

Are you connecting to the servers through at&t or cogent along the way?

    Yes?

    its packet loss, your welcome.

It might not be national news but there have been a few attacks on major data centers, primarly data centers owned and operated by at&t, cogent, and comcast. I was having the same issues last week with servers on the other side of the country.

edit: please not, like someone else already stated in this thread. Packet loss between where you live and where the servers are located can happen and disapear in seconds. I suggest keeping the above program on your desktop and even open and ready to trace if you think you are going to experience lag again. I dont recommend starting a trace and leaving it on while you play as i have noticed it to hog bandwidth, though you do have the option to watch your connection to what ever ip you use, live.

also, in case you have a hard time believing my wild claim you can use this handy website to check on hourly updates. It is an internet health report that gives you a better idea of just how jacked up some companies are right now with there service.

select for the last 24 hours to get a daily average, last week cogent and at&t were averaging like 50% packet loss.

actually it just dawned on me. Isnt it odd that the only companies who appear to be suffering from heavy packet loss are also companies who wish to completely abolish net neutrality?
so if cybers issue really is packet loss, you could go as far as saying... your problem is American fortune 500 company political maneuvers. lmfao

    sooo...
i live in canada, internet used to be from Bell, now from videotron.
so im not sure if the above packet losses seen in at&t is the same shit that happens here.

it's been ok and lagless for a bit, but then again i havent played css much in the last week, hopefully when i play more, i can start seeing what's going on.
    thanks for the links tho
Started from bottom. Now we here. <IBIS>

Remember, you are connecting to a US data center. You might not be using at&t where you are but at some point you may have to connect through a data center here in the states. That is why you should tracert, even if you are not currently lagging so that you can see what path you are taking to connect to servers in the states.

Videotron/whatever provider you have only deal with what is called the last mile, you actually bounce between all the networks.
If I recall correctly level3 runs the major pipe down the middle of america, so there is a very good chance you go through them at some point. Like a spine.

The routes into our server are:
    Comcast® 2X10Gbps

    Level3® 8X10Gbps

    NTT America 8X10Gbps

    TeliaSonera 2X10Gbps

    Equinix 4X10Gbps

    Telefónica 2X10Gbps

    Time Warner 2X10Gbps

Then there is a private line that will also take us in 1 hop to:
    NYC
    ATL
    Chicago
    Amsterdam

Where as you may then be connecting to the lan at those points and then being ported over the internal network if it is faster.

In my local case I see in my trace route that I hit the local exchange here in atl and then get the rest of the way on the lan to DC.

    Other pop locations are:
    London
    Frankfurt
    Miami
    Huston
    Huston#2
    DAL
    DAL#2
    DAL#3
    DAL#4
    DAL#5
    DAL#6
    LA
    San Jose
    Denver
    Seattle
    Tokyo
    Hong Kong
    Singapore

Each of those pops then has their local exchanges which differ from the local exchange in DC. Hong Kong at 5 hops is the furthest from the DC datacenter.
