The kitchen is spotless. The grease was in a cooking pan with a cover on it... I guess it was just older grease... DOn't start preaching to me about cleaniness because I guarantee my home is cleaner then 95% of yours.

Leave a better description and you won't hear preaching. I wasn't being mean at all. Leaving grease in a pan on the stove is not exactly...spotless. I can take pictures of my house if you like, it's damn clean considering I'm OCD haha.

Once again, don't get angry for something that wasn't even meant to be an insult.

When you come here to talk about everyday life, mishaps or just plain rant it's not necessarily nice to jump down the throats of people who are contributing to your thread.

Never cook in something that you do not have the lid for...

This happened to the person who lives above my apartment. I went in there hearing a commotion and saw flames shooting 5 feet in the air (luckly it had really high ceilings). The lady had put it in the sink and poured water on it, creating Greek fire. She said what do I do and I asked her to put the lid on it and hold it down. She did and the fire stopped after a few seconds. She asked how I knew that would stop it and I said that all fires need air. She also asked why the water made it worse but I do not think she understood that you can not put out oil with water and the mixture actually makes it burn more. She said she tried to put sugar on it but I have never heard of that before except that you could use sand to cut off the air. I think sugar is for chemical fires or to help heal your own burns. Ever burnt your tong and put sugar on it and you know what I mean.

Glad to hear that everything worked out ok but remember these rules for the future:

• oil will instantly catch on fire if its temperature gets to high
• never cook a large amount of oil at maximum temperature
• if cooking something submerged in oil never have the cover on (this increases the temperature too much)
• Placing something very cold in hot oil will cause an explosion
• The fastest way to put the fire out it to remove the heat source and the oxygen.
• If deep frying over a stove watch the oil at all times and ensure the temperature is not too high.
• Ideally have a temp probe to ensure the oil does not get close to the temperature of combustion.
• oil does not need to be in the presence of grease or any other matter to start a fire, only heat

Remember only you can prevent pants fires!

And my mother is german who is also ocd, my step father is a head janitor at a school, so cleaning is all they do. My mother washes the floor at least twice a day.


SO! Here is a revised, more in-depth story for you idiots lol.


I decided to deepfry some french fries so I would have something to go with my chicken fingers. I seen the big pot of oil on the glass covered stove and knew it was for deepfrying. SO i turned on the burner so it would melt the oil into liquid form again. After a few minutes I noticed the pot was only half way on the burner, so I move it all the way on and went to check the IBIS forums. THE POT HAD A GLASS COVER ON IT! "4 Zero " About 5 mintues later I heard my step father yell 'Jon WTF!' and I went running into the kitchen to see it full of smoke, which was coming from the pot. SO I ripped open the door to go outside and my step father aka Jesse grabbed the pot and tried carriing it outside. As he was bringing it, the cover moved and let fresh air into the pot which allowed the oil to just explode into flames. Jesse dropped the pot on the floor and flaming oil splashed everywhere. I didn't notice until this morning but some got on me and burnt a hole in the pants I was wearing atm LOL. So instictively I run and grabbed my logging pants and used them to put out some of the fire, aka smothering, while jesse got the fire extingusher and put out the rest.

remember with a grease fire: throw as much water on it as possible, that'll stop it real good.
