Thread: soooo...megaupload

From my experience in being a Internet pirate and most whom I've met agree that they use internet piracy 2 check a product out before purchase so they don't buy it, realize it sucks, and go well shit.. I'm stuck with it...

so your saying that there best movies (james bond series basically) are movies that were made like what 30-40 years ago? before online piracy even existed? hmmm I wonder why they really went under lol...

look at avatar, sure people downloaded it, but when they realized it was an awesome movie, they went and saw it in theaters (in many cases multiple times) and purchased it when they could.

MGM went under because the majority of there movies are shit. Granted they did have some awesome ones... the majority was shit, look through there movie list, it's not hard 2 see.

stop blaming internet piracy for shit it's not responsible for.

I think the only movie worth my time is The Grey. The time before that I hate to admit but was Tron: Legacy. Before that? I don't remember, probably Star Wars which left me bitter and hateful of George Lucas.

The film industry can sit and spin. I hope the remains they found by the Hollywood sign was that of a "famous" director or a reality T.V. star. Nothing would make me happier.

If someone steals money and then puts that money in a bank should the bank be shut down? If stolen money is used to pay taxes should the government be shutdown? If a stolen car is parked in a parking garage do you shut the parking gurage down?

If a posibily copyrighted pice of data might be stored on a forign website whom is not violating any of their laws but might be violating a law somewhere in the universe should it be shut down?

YES just like the bank, government and parking gurage the website is no different and should have known better than to just take and store things without knowing what exactly those things are or where they came from... well at least that is what this government believes.

Well, Zero, I do have to point out a flaw in that argument. If someone deposits stolen money in a bank, when the case is resolved, that money leaves the bank (the bank forfeits the money). As for the other two, when you pay your taxes with stolen money, you've bought a good and it's up to you to repay the money you stole. And if a car is an a garage, the garage doesn't own the car. If it does, then they absolutely go after the garage, but normally, the car would simply be removed.

When the Pirate Bay was sent a cease and desist letter, they replied that the government could go fuck themselves because they weren't hosted in the US. This was the government making an example out of someone.

At the same time, it wasn't a company that was hosted somewhere that the government shut down. Megaupload was based in china, yet they had a server in Virginia which let the US act on them as some of their content is hosted on our soil, therefore they are violating our laws in our country. That was their mistake.

just so we're clear, my argument was based on pirating for your own personal use, not for making money off of content you don't own, or any of that.

when i pirate, most of the time i don't end up buying the product even if i do like it. the way i see it, its either i get it for free or i don't get it at all (i'm a poor kid in college...way too much else going on monetarily), either way they're not making or losing money off of me. but if i'm playing, show my friends, and they want to get it too just because they saw me, i actually just made the companies more money than i would've without piracy.

I know, that's the big reason I stopped arguing. I said that I'm not against sharing on a small scale. I'm against the profit of it. Loaning a movie to a friend or copying it for them (maybe because you don't trust them to bring it back in good condition) should NOT be against the law. It currently is.

But with the amount of money these people made off the website in order to facilitate the large scale sharing, they were despicable people. As I said, copying does NOT remove the original, and is therefore not stealing. Yet, profiting from facilitating large scale copying is stealing. Not of the content, but of the revenue.

if you truly respect the game, movie, or music you're pirating.... you will purchase it.

well the way i see it once the movie leaves theaters it should be free game.I mean back when blockbuster sold the program to decrepit there block so you could just burn the movies so the whats the difference between that and just buying a subscription to a site that does that for you i don't see the difference .the only difference that i really see is the one who is making the money.

    Clearly you are pro SOPA/PIPA.

sometimes, the best way to fight piracy is to use media outlets like steam and netflix. Not completely abolish the internet and arrest foreign people in other country's creating world hate for our country because of our government. The fact that you are even arguing somthing that will forever exists is beyond me, your point is moot in a long and large scale.
