B/c paintball is supposed to be scenario play also as the econ is down the more devoted players make up a larger population of the customer base and those people are interested in real paintball.

Paintball was created by Vietnam vets who wanted the game to simulate conditions in Vietnam. Over time as the sport grew a common problem emerged, people hate to lose to people better than themselves. You see people really hated being killed by people they could not see (snipers) even back in the day when the range was only a few feet! So the following changes where made to solve this problem over time:
Time limit: reduce the time available for the sniper to hide and for you to walk past him.
Field size: reduce field size so we know where he is
Hiding places: reduce hiding places for sniper so we know where he is
Starting locations: make it so we can see people when we start so we know where they go.

Over time these changes mounted and you ended up with speed ball. A lot of people like this today b/c of the fast nature of the game however the real purpose of speed ball is actually to equalize player skill levels down to movement speed because people do not like being killed by snipers.

To prevent snipers in speed ball the game is on a small map where the players can see everyone and with too little time to lose track of anyone. Unfortunately this is not how real combat works. In real combat you do not know where your enemies are and the game is won from intelligence and not from who shoots and runs the fastest. This is the lesson that the vets were trying to teach when they created the sport to being with.

not 2 mention speedball is really exspensive. your gear that you'll need if you want 2 play speedball seriously, is not cheap. and you will go through more paint playing speedball than anything. Speedball is for ppl who have time, dedication and money. without those things, you can't play speedball seriously... unless you get a sponsor.

as for the history of paintball I'm gonna have 2 disagree. paintball didn't surface till the 80's and it was thx 2 Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines

you can find all the info about them here.

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_invent..._paintball_gun

and the existance of the paintball gun was simply for marking forestry sections, and cattle... until hayes had the brain fart, "who would do better in a survival sittuation? a country boy? or city boy" which lead 2 the first organized paintball game ever.

here's the Nelspot 007 first ever made paintball marker.

maynard is right on that, speedball gear is expensive!!! total I've spend on just gear alone is well over a grand. my G3 was cheaper than all my gear put together hahaha.

I purchased the dye C7 09' model paintball paints and so far they have been awesome.

the rotor hopper has to be the most expensive piece of equipment besides the marker.

I got lucky and got hooked up with the ninja "booby" tank, it lets me play more compact in the snake.

oh and if anyone has an auto-mag marker from the 90's I am interested in purchasing one from someone. I heard it is a blast to play with on the airball field since it isn't an electronic marker.

what about a fiber wraped tank? they value at pretty much the same as the rotor Lol.. well if you get a good 1 like pure energy they do.

I'm gonna pick up a rotor this year. using halo b with rip drive right now... I hate it.

well at least according to winkipedia... I read up on the history before that site existed. You should note that it is a history that is disputed and even according to the sources sited by winkipedias own article claims "Thus the first game of paintball took place in 1978" and that "The actual origins of paintball may be disputed by people all over the world."

Also as far as expense goes it really does not matter much. I do not play speed ball but have equipment that costs even more money than those players use.

wikipedia can be edited by any person at anytime. you should never take wikipedia 2 heart. I can go on there right now, and change the info on the paintball page 2 say whatever I want. you should take everything you read on there with a grain of salt.

the only dispute ive ever hear was that' It wasn't hayes who started the first game, it was a group of like 12 ppl in new hampshire(1 of them being hayes). all the rest of the stuff I said is a fact, you can go do the research on the companies. paintballs were made in the 60's by the nelson paint comapny, with the key point of marking trees and cattle. the Nelspot 707 is the first paintball marker ever created and it was in the late 60's. you could buy them in agriculture magazines. that is 100% what the basis of paintball was formed on...Not the game! just the point in having the paintballs and the markers for forestry and cattle.

paintballs and the markers were not designed 2 be a game, they were designed for cattle and forestry marking, and that's an absolute fact you can find much info on, including images from the original magazines the adds were in. I also suggest listening 2 the audio file on the first link I showed, where he explains in detail when he formed the first game and how and why it went down.

I suggest checking the second link I posted. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_invent..._paintball_gun

I just went 2 wikipedia and for paintball under the history section this is exactly what it says

"In 1976, Hayes Noel, a stock trader, Bob Gurnsey, and Charles Gaines were walking home and chatting about Gaines' recent trip to Africa and his experiences hunting buffalo. Eager to recreate the adrenaline rush that came with the thrill of the hunt, and inspired by Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game, the two friends came up with the idea to create a game where they could stalk and hunt each other.[4]

In the ensuing months, the friends talked about what sorts of qualities and characteristics made for a good hunter and survivalist. They were stumped, however, on how to devise a test of those skills. It wasn't until a year and a half later that George Butler, a friend of theirs, showed them a paintball gun in an agricultural catalog. The gun was a Nelspot 007 marker manufactured by the Nelson Paint Company (headquarters in Kingsford, MI).[5] The Nelspot 007 marker had, until this time, been solely used to mark and identify trees and cattle.[6]"

paintball history is only disputed cause 90% of ppl don't actually go research the facts, they hear through word of mouth how it started. go to google.com type paintball history. every single piece of literature you get will say hayes and charles gaines.

and no, I did not edit the wikipedia content. that's what was there when I went 2 it.

Well yes I would hope that everyone knows where paintball guns come from that is pretty well known.

I would really like to get my equipment fixed up for some games in the summer. Maybe even get a few upgrades to my internals and loader. Back in the day I had every upgrade but they have released a few since then that would be nice to add in while I am at it. Paintball was always so much fun!

show me 1 thing that says it was not hayes or gaines. I honestly would love 2 see it. even type in history of paintball on google. you get nothing but info on hayes and gaines, giving them credit for there work and being the creator of the sport.

but serious if you know some credible link that claims other wise, id love 2 see it.

I wasn't aware in my last msg that you were saying sarcastically "according 2 wikipedia" and I couldn't agree more, I don't like when ppl base everything they say off that site... more so cause it's all user edited content. but I can provide like 30 other sites if you want

Wikipedia has become pretty accurate with citations which is EXACTLY what a encyclopedia should be. It's become quite accurate that some professors in universities will allow you to use some information on it as long as you can back up the claims of what's being said.

The only tie of military and paintball is now its used to reenact live combat training, and play out scenarios at military bases. However, that wasn't implemented until the 90s.
