I just want to kind of play devil's advocate here, as some information that has been presented had been false, and VAC does not have the cleanest record. I'm not here to offend, defend, or anger anyone. I just want there to be a clear understanding about VAC.

Firstly, OMGBEARS.

Your VAC ban on Black Ops transfers to every game on that account.

This is incorrect. VAC bans by game engine, which is why people who are banned in 1.6 can still play in VAC secured Source servers, and vice-versa. Bans in MW2 only affect MW2. This information is taken directly from the page you linked, just a little further down the page, under the header VAC Enabled Games.

Secondly, VAC is not infallible. It is certainly an effective tool and works almost all of the time, but let's not forget about the whole MW2 debacle where 12000 people had their VAC bans overturned.

For those who don't want to read that, there was a conflict between an updated .dll and the disc-based .dll, which caused the mass banning.

This is also how people get banned in MW2 and blackops when trying to alter their configurations, such as widescreen, console, etc. They require the alteration of .dll files.



There are also 3 other incidents of false-positives, all of which had their VAC bans reversed.

On release, VAC was banning for faulty memory.

VAC was banning for running VAC-secured games through CEDEGA, which some of you may know as WineX, on Linux platforms.

A server side glitch in 2004.


There are also reports of incorrect detections, of which only 1 incident had bans reversed. These programs would be classified as benign cheats, as they have no real effect on multiplayer.

HLamp, which allowed you to manipulate your Winamp client through the game. This was reveresed.

Running x-spectate. This was changed from a ban to a kick, but no bans from this have been reversed.

Half-Life single player mods Paranoia and Half-Life FX. These still trigger a ban.

sXe Injected, which was supposed to be an anti-cheat engine for CS. No longer triggers a ban, no bans reversed.


So, while a VAC ban should certainly throw up warning flags, I hope you realize that it's not a flawless system and that you take pause before angrily throwing accusations left and right.

I'm not defending Deathrowe, and I hope none of you take offense. This is merely an attempt to shed some light on the subject.

Well, I say ban me... I'm not hacking and don't care, but I ask you to put this into prospective. When HL2 engine came out and they started allowing people to tweak CSS config/autoexec.cfgs. What started to happen?

People were tweaking the sky, they were tweaking the players to have very low textures, they were tweaking the weapons not to appear and what happeend? VAC started to bad them because they said it gave players a unfair advantage.

Now with black ops... Imagine that all over again? You tweak fog to not appear, you tweak the ping to act differently, to tweak it to have a better hit box system. Each and every tweak you do, is a change not only to the config file, but it also changes conditions. Is this cheating or not? Some see it so, and some don't. Depends on who look at it... In the eye of the beholder.

So really... consider all things, all conditions, all past experinces with VAC, and even present/future possible issues. No matter how much I state, "I don't hack", to some that are being shallow minded. Only see VAC as a "Only Hacker Catcher", but there is tremindous faults with VAC and the system will never be 100% efficient. The good thing is, and I will state this. Banning someone for no reason or banning someone for a good reason. It still does a very good job on banning the hackers and getting rid of the graphics minipulation.

Unfortunately, I could have been one of those graphics bannable individuals. I know that in the past, they have done it and expecially with CSS. They allowed people to tweak they config.cfg/autoexec.cfg, but then they pulled back and started banning for unfair gameplay.

Steam/VAC is nothing but a regulated system, that still a will always have faults. How can I have 3 accounts and still not be banned with any CS/HL/or TF2 game? Consider that.

Btw, I have multi accounts because first one I had, it could have possibly been taken because they started banning acounts for being ran at Cyber Pubs. Second account was to protect me, incase that happened. Third is because I was a admin for GzN, but I eventually started to make my own server. I used the off account to catch hackers in the act, so they couldn't tell who it was.

I'm.. not certain why this thread is still active.

By in large we do not allow people who have been VAC banned on our servers, especially when they display questionable behavior in game.

We have banned and forcibly removed regulars in our community for such things, and I suspect Deathrow will be no different. While he is more literate, I don't believe that offers anyone a free pass on this.
